Today I was shooting my granddaughter's Baptism and my
D300 stopped shooting. It took me a while, but I took the lens off of M/A mode and moved it to M mode and with my manual focusing I was able to take some more pictures. I then put another lens on and it worked fine. So the problem is my lens. What suggestions do you have? I love the help I have received with other problems so I await a reply.

Congratulations to the entire family of the newly baptized grand-daughter.

When (how long ago) did you buy the lens? Where did you buy it? Was there any warranty? Have you been in touch with the vendor to discuss the issue? Have you been in touch with Nikon to discuss the issue? With respect, the problem may have arisen due to a change in settings - something many of us have done - and might easily be corrected. Have you checked UHH's Search feature for posts concerning this lens? I wouldn't be in a hurry to discard the a lens which may be perfectly good. AF shooting problems could indicate a camera issue.

No Warranty as I bought this through Ebay a few years ago. I love this lens. I switched another lens's to my camera and they worked fine so I am pretty sure it is the lens. I have never sent anything to Nikon for repair, but am pretty sure that is my next course of action. Do you think I should call them first? Like I said I love this lens. I want to eventually go to FX but one lens at a time. I will soon be getting the 70-200 II next.

If the focusing is set to Release rather than Focus then it won't take the picture if it hasn't acquired proper focus. That may have happened if you were shooting in dim light. Was the light very dim where you were shooting? If so, try taking photos again in an area with good lighting.

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and see if that doesn't work as well. A pencil eraser will work and then blow off to make sure no particles left on contacts. I would do this before you send in the lens. Hope this helps!

I would definitely call Nikon and speak with their technical people before sending the lens to them or attempting any repairs of your own.

Hi Dave. I have the same lens and it did the same thing to me once. Clean the contacts on the camera and the lens. I use the lens wipes. and a paper towel. I f that doesn't work, if you have a camera store close let them look at it first. If they are any good they will look it up and see if it is a common problem with the lens.

Just finished cleaning the contacts and it still does not work. I will call Nikon and probably send it in for repair. Like I said, I love this lens.....

Well, after sending the 17-55 in to Nikon for repair my 105 is now not auto focusing. I put it on right after my 17-55 stopped working and it worked fine, but now it does not so I think it is my camera (a D300). Has anyone else had this problem? I am going to take my camera into a camera shop before I send my camera in to Nikon.
What could this be?????

Not sure, but I'd let Nikon know about this, as there's no reason to pay for the repair of the 17-55, if it ain't broke. Just saying.

About four years ago, after only 90 days of use, my Nikkor 18-200 DX f3.5 would not auto-focus but was perfect in manual focus. I sent it to Nikon under warranty and the repair was done. I tell you this only to put concerns you may have at bay. Since the repair I've taken upwards of 30,000 images and the lens just keeps on clickin'.

If you can, try the 105 on another Nikon body. If it works there the problem could be the camera. Do your other lenses AF on the camera?
