There is the old saying of "you get what you pay for." With that I guess it will depend on how tall you want the tripod to extend and how stable you want/need it to be. Tripods in the $20-$60 price range might not fit what you want/need. The cheapest tripod I have found that is so/so on extended height and good on stability is the Dolica 100.

Not sure what to tell you. Maybe eBay - in the price range you list, I don't think you can get a decent tripod, even a used one. Of course, one could argue that any tripod is better than no tripod. But,unless you get some quality sticks and a decent head with a quick release plate, you're going to just be frustrated both with the process of using the tripod and the results. I think you could find something satisfactory for about $100, though. Your tripod is your most important camera accessory.

I would recommend not setting your budget until you figure out what lenses you'd like to wind up with. The tripod you pick must support 1.5 to 2x the weight of the body & your heaviest lens. At present, my heaviest outfit is a Sony Alpha 850 & Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 which weighs about 6.5 pounds. My goal is to have a Tamron 150-600 zoom which weighs about 4.5 pounds making for a heavy combination about 8 pounds. I purchased a Vanguard Abeo 363CT from B&H that will support a 30 pound load.

I'm not saying you have to purchase a carbon fiber tripod or one that will support a 30 pound load. Check the B&H website for tripods and look carefully at the load they will support before you buy.

Almost forgot. Also make sure it will extend tall enough so you don't have to hunch over without extending the center post all the way.

I would go to a local camera store and try some out. They should carry some around $100 that you can test out. Then you would get an idea of what you want. I picked up a Dolica 100 a few years ago at Costco for $89 it is sturdy, carbon fiber, and easy to adjust. It does not go as high as I want without extending the center mast all the way. This is ok unless it is windy then the camera moves.

Look for a used product. There are lots of them around that are in great condition. There are lots of lazy photos that buy a good unit and then don't use it. Bogan/Manfrotto aluminum units are available at budget pricing. You live in a large shopping area something should be out there. You need to find a Photo Mentor that can help you. Clubs, referrals from camera stores looking at exhibits. Find someone that can direct you.

I don't think you need an expensive, heavy tripod at this time - here are what's available from B&H for under $100. You don't necessarily have to buy from them, but check the specifications, and you should find one that suits your needs. Good luck. :)

I bought a nice tripod a little over a year ago. It suited my needs well. Just last week I bought a big, heavy zoom lens and the nice tripod I bought isn't cutting it. You'll save money if you plan ahead. No sense paying twice.
