An interview with Richtiger,
1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been interested in photography for many years. My mum was a keen photographer way back in the day.
2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training but have done a lot of different types of photography. EG: Weddings, portraits, landscapes etc Night landscapes are my favourite.
3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Imagination, adding a point of interest.
4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? I used a Nikon D610 with Nikon 14-24 f2.8 lens. 20 second exposure at f2.8. ISO 3200. I used an led torch to light the beam in the sky and as the exposure was happening I gently cupped my hand around the beam to light the road and grass beside me. All whilst keeping still for the 20 seconds.
5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Yes I did the post processing in Lightroom 5. Mainly adding contrast and clarity .. also bringing up the whites with a touch of noise reduction.
6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I love the night sky and try to capture the majesty of the milky way whenever I can.
7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
No, not really ... perhaps trying to keep still would help.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How addictive it can become.
9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
For night photography, a good tripod and a good torch.
10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
For night photography, and landscapes in general, the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 which I have. It's awesome wide open and very accurate especially in the corners. Maybe also a Sigma ART 35mm f1.4 for panoramic landscapes.
11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Various torches. I do a lot of light painting of foreground objects, which I use a simple led torch for. I occasionally use a flash but i prefer the light painting method.
12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Videography, which is my main job.
13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Lots of funny things happen when wandering around in the dark ... it's a fascinating experience and can be scary all by yourself. But once you overcome that and your eyes adjust to the night sky .. it's simply awesome. Australia is a great place to take night photos ... not a lot of light pollution and the weather is great.
14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://www.nightscapeimages.com.au15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
It's 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration. Not original I know but very true.
