New Photographer
Hi. I am a fairly new photographer. My husband bought me a Nikon D3100 kit for Christmas. It is my first SLR camera. I had been using a Nikon Cool Pix 7000, which I love. I have been reading all about how to use the D3100, but I haven't used it much yet......so much to learn! We are going to visit Winterthur in Delaware in a few weeks and I hope to get good pictures of the gardens there. Any suggestions? I need all the help I can get.

Welcome to UHH. I have the D3100 well satisfied. Start using it, on auto is will be as easy as Cool Pix. As you begin using the manual aspect will come to you.
Welcome!!!!! Start playing with it NOW!!!!! get familiar with the feel, and practice bracing yourself for steady pictures unless you plan on dragging a tripod around...
Hi Carolyn, and welcome. Take that new camera with you everywhere and get to know its features inside and out. Try some setting on your camera and take tons of pictures at that setting. They don't have to be great pictures, just learning how to use the camera. Delete them all if you don't like them. Try another setting, or maybe try a specific focal length on your lens and learn to compose and get the shot without zooming in and out. Nikon's camera manuals are pretty good to learn from, but I have found that David Busch's manuals are even better. Which lens (lenses?) do you have for your camera?
Welcome to UHH. I hope you find time to enjoy your trip, in between all the photo's you will be taking. Take several photo's of the same subject from different angles. Give thought to the composition, so your not just taking snap shots.
Hello & Welcome
My advice--practice and more practice.
Read the UHH forum every chance you have.
Welcome to the UHH
Happy St. Paddy's Day to one and all.
I'm on my way out to hoist a pint of Guinness (or two)
Since your not a pro with the D3100 yet, try this. For every shot you take, use the auto modes. You can choose 'auto', or you can go into the landscape, macro, portrait ..etc modes (all auto on the mode dial). Then, experiment. Fool around with aperture or shutter priority..play with the camera with manual settings. This way, you won't loose the shot and you'll gain valuable experience with the cameras functions. Good luck..have fun.
Welcome. I can't add anything else to the advice already posted except have fun, and don't be afraid to experiment. The Delete button will be your best friend.

Welcome aboard Carolyn. You wont be too far from Longwood gardens. Dont miss going there. Im not sure what will be in bloom but it is a beautiful spot for photos.
Take a lot of pictures today (they're digital - you can throw them away) and get comfortable with the camera. Probably want to use "auto mode" for the first day and then throw all caution to the wind! :)
Welcome to the forum, and I bet you get lots of better advice than I have.
Thanks. I got Bush's book and I downloaded Revell's book. They are great. I get a little intimidated when I try to figure it all out, but I love taking pictures, so I'll hang in there!
Thanks, that is what I am trying to do!
