I saved $200+, evidently got a non-gray market lens, and paid no shipping. It's got the 5 year extended warranty from Nikon slip in the box. I'm thinking I had a lucky day!

I hate to rain on your parade, but you still are not necessarily out of the woods. In order to get warranty service from Nikon you have to provide both the warranty certificate AND a dated proof of purchase (Bill of Sale) from an authorized Nikon dealer. Did you also get a proof of purchase from an authorized Nikon dealer?

Don't know the answer to your question about proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. But I'm hoping I won't need any service. It's a gamble I'm willing to take.

Had me going for a minute. Couldn't find a "US" on any of the paperwork, but the lens itself has the "US" at the beginning of the serial number!

Went out this afternoon with a friend from our local photo club. I'm very, very happy with this lens. It almost takes the place of the two kit lenses that came with my camera. The 55-200 has a bit more reach, but for most of my photos, the 10-140 will more than suffice and I won't have to swap lenses. It takes really nice photos! It's a bit heavier than either of the kit lenses and it may be a bit sharper too. Happy guy here!

That US on the lens means it is a USA model

That wasn't a question. The warranty certificate states that a dated proof of sale is required for warranty service.

This is an interesting issue. I want the new Canon 100-400 and it is £2000 ($3070) in the UK. I can see that I can buy it in USA and Canada for quite a bit less. So it may well be worth the one year gamble as I am visiting Vancouver and then into Alaska next month. Is this seriously going to be a grey lense?

The biggest question I see is customs. Are the revenooers going to hit you for the VAT which is the primary reason for the price differential. Check that out before buying.

It will be grey market in the UK. Getting it home through Customs could be a bit of an issue, especially if you have the box and software that came with it. You could always disassemble the box and put everything in a UPS flat pack and ship it home, if you even keep the stuff. Probably little if any tax on that, but you could be required to show proof that you did not purchase the lens abroad when you return home. Best to check with other UK photographers to find out how strict UK Customs are in such matters. As far as repairs in the UK I would guess that Canon's policy is similar to their policy here in the US. They won't honor the warranty but they will repair grey market. You have to pay for the repairs. That's only a guess though. UK policy may be different. Shouldn't make much difference on resale once the warranty period is over since the buyer would have to pay for repairs anyway.
