History repeats itself. The piracy and hostage taking by Muslim pirates and nations in North Africa coast led to the creation of America's blue water navy and an intrepid action by the USMC ("...to the shores of Tripoli). Now the Iranians have seized a ship and are holding the crew hostage. The ship was just seized, in Intl waters.

====================

TEHRAN (FNA)- A US cargo ship with 34 crew was stopped and seized by Iranian Navy warships on Tuesday. The Iranian naval forces have confiscated the American trade vessel with all its 34 crew, informed sources said.

Early reports said the vessel has been seized for trespassing on Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, but informed sources later told FNA that "The ship is a trade vessel and has been seized by the Iranian naval forces at the request of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization".

"The ship was seized after a relevant court order was issued for its confiscation," he added, indicating that the ship owner had some long-standing overdue payments that it had to settle with IPMO.

Iran said that the overdue payments justified seizing the ship while it was in international waters.

The source said the ship is a "Marshall Islands-f**gged, but is owned by the US", adding that the crew are from different nationalities, including Europeans and Asians.

The source said there could also be American nationals among the crew.

An Iranian warship is now taking the American vessel to Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf.

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy is responsible for security of Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed the development minutes ago, while a Pentagon spokesman said a Marshall Islands-f**gged ship had been boarded by the Iranian navy.

"The vessel initially ignored the warning, but complied after the shots were fired," a US Army Colonel Steve Warren told RT.

A Pentagon spokesman said the name of the ship is Maersk Tigris, adding that no US navy or military forces were involved in the incident.

Other sources also quoted the Pentagon spokesman as saying that US planes and destroyer USS Farragut responded to Maersk Tigris distress call and are monitoring the situation as Maersk Tigris is nearing the Iranian port.

Just happened but lots of coverage. Haven't seen any statements by Obama, yet. Web search on the following phrase brings millions of hits:

"iranians seize cargo ship"

The Marshall Islands are not part of the U.S. This text misleads.

The text is accurate. Most cargo ships owned by USA or European firms are registered in Liberia or other countries of convenience. Why? Tax advantages; confidentiality advantages; low cost of registration; slack enforcement of safety rules, etc. It is likely here that the hijackers are correct: USA firm-owned vessel but registered formally in the Marshall Islands.

The text is saying that the ship is f**gged in the Marshall Islands, but the ship is US owned. This is common in ship-owning. Many ships, for example, are registered in Liberia, but are owned by different countries or companies. This is done to take advantage of more favorable laws.

The above is precise and correct, and more succinct than my own comments. The seizure appears to be piracy or privateering, directed at a USA ship, and arguably an act of war.

This text misleads:
=====
A US cargo ship with 34 crew was stopped and seized by Iranian Navy warships on Tuesday. The Iranian naval forces have confiscated the American trade vessel with all its 34 crew, informed sources said.

The source said the ship is a Marshall Islands-f**gged, but is owned by the US.
=====
The U.S. does not own the cargo ship. A U.S. business owns the ship.

A reader not reading carefully could presume that Iran has taken action against a ship "owned by the US" when in fact the U.S. does not own it.

That is the misleading impression that the news media worker and his boss aimed to produce in order to generate reader interest to increase audience share for the advertisers who pay according to audience share. The quest for money underlies such misleading text.

I think you should have prefaced your remark with the words "I would speculate".

The story was apparently first reported by a Saudi Arabian news service. Perhaps they don't possess your astonishingly perfect command of the English tongue, and nuances thereof. I urge you to contact the approximately 5 million places reporting on the story and demand that they run their linguistic efforts past you before posting.

Nope. I described a business model governing the news media business which functions as a profit-making enterprise, and thus remains subject to the syndrome of economic bias affecting its operation.

Your sarcasm is taken as such.

FYI: This misleading text has nothing to do with linguistics and everything to do with fact-checking and intellectual honesty plus careful writing.
