Talked to a Nikon rep I know yesterday. He said a new Coolpix is in the works that will have a zoom to 2000mm. Last year he told me that point n shoots are dinosauers and Nikon had laid off some 30 employees in that division. So, I asked him what's up. Comment was that this is a move to breath new life in this category by out competing the phone cameras; meaning it should be a while before phone cameras can match a 2000mm lens. I also asked him what quality resolution might it have. Answer: did not know but opinion was that it would be good enough for the non-professional, as cropping would not be needed. He has not been able to get one for evaluation.

Stay tuned!

That would be a complement to my kit. I always have aCoolpix in my cameras bag. You never know when you may need it.

Any announcement regarding the death of advanced compact p&s cameras is, in my opinion, highly premature. Nikon's decision to abandon the p&s field gives Canon an opportunity to shine at long last as the brightest star in the photographic firmament.

I'm assuming you mean the P900 - this camera looks like so much fun! I don't know why I would need 83 x zoom - but I might have to try it.
I'm considering selling my canon SL1 and my canon sx700 to buy one of these guys.
Please - if you have a P900 - Please let us know how you like it??? Are you loving it?? THANKS for your time

I just received the P900 a few days ago. The wide photo is at 24mm and the vent on top of the roof is at 2,000mm. The camera is JPEG only and has many features. The long shot was not altered at all and the quality for such a long zoom is not bad. So far I like the camera a lot. I also have a Canon 70D but I think that the P900 will be a great carry around camera.,
