The new Canon is supposed to be quite remarkable, pretty much like shooting with a prime lens across all focal lengths, or at least that is what some of the reviews that I have read have lead me to believe. I have not been able to find much on the Sigma, just wondering if there are members out there that can lend their experience with these lenses.

Blurry, my opinion, get the Canon and a 1.4x. ;-)

Yes, I was very much leaning that way but then I see so many members have purchased the Sigma... Hoping to hear from them.

Can't add too much to this but yesterday I sold my 100-400 ver I and went for the ver ii. It is being used on my 7dmarkii. Haven't tried the 1.4 iii withnitmyet but just some nonsense photos with it before it got dark and my short answer is WOW!!!!!!!. Only down side is that it is heavy compared to the ver I but still light i guess compared to the 6 lbs for the sigma sport. My other thought would have been the sigma c version. So far it appears that it surpasses the Tamron 150-600 also. Hope this helpsquote=Blurryeyed]The new Canon is supposed to be quite remarkable, pretty much like shooting with a prime lens across all focal lengths, or at least that is what some of the reviews that I have read have lead me to believe. I use my 100-400 II primarily on my 7DII. Very pleased with it. I find it easy to use hand-held and the IS is excellent. Paired with either my 7DII or 6D the focus is lightning fast and silent. Very little micro-adjustment was necessary on either end of the focal length. I've never shot the Sig, but the only advantage I can see in it would be the reach. Here are some random shots I took with it:

Thanks for your feed back, it's a hard call because the 100-400 II has such excellent reviews, it is hard to find reviews on the Sigma but it is very clear that the Sigma Sport lens is a different animal than the Sigma Contemporary version of the same lens. I have time to make my decision, the Canon is off the hook on Photozone's resolution charts so that was my first choice but I have yet to see resolution tests done of the Sigma, if it tests comparable to the Canon then that extra 200mm would be nice.

I would also like to see resolution charts for the Sigma 150 to 600.

100-400mm II or 150-600mm...

On what camera?

For what uses and purposes?

Both seem quite good and are pretty similarly priced. The Sigma is much larger/heavier, and if using it on a crop sensor camera, anything over 400mm is extremely long telephoto and can be difficult to work with. But if shooting full frame or your favorite subjects are small, shy birds (for example), the 150-600mm might be more ideal.

I agree that long telephotos and be difficult to work with on crop but sometimes you can't get as close to the birds as you would like. At any rate I have both a 6D and a 7D and someday might upgrade the 7D to the newer 7D MKII. As it is the 7D would be the most used body with this lens. I already have the older 100-400 so I pretty much understand the challenges just looking for real life feedback on the two lenses.

I shoot with a Canon 60D and a 6D and I'm in the market for a good long lens and have had my eye on the Sigma 150-600 S. I have a Canon 70-200 f2.8 ii and love the lens, but when I put the 2X extender on it, I don't like the results. Most notably, I don't like how slow the auto focus becomes. The new iteration of the Canon 100-400mm has gotten great reviews. Anyone know the results of adding the 1.4 extender to the new Canon 100-400?

Here is my analysis, based on what little information I have;

The Canon is 100-400 mm, f4.5-5.6 and with the 1.4 extender it will be 140-560mm, f5.6-6.5.

The Sigma is 150-600mm, f5-6.3.

You can see that, all things being equal (comparing the Sigma to the Canon with the 1.4X), they are pretty comparable in focal length and aperture. So the questions become sharpness and speed of focus. The Sigma is $1999. The Canon, with 1.4 extender, is $2648 - advantage Sigma. The Canon, sans the extender, has the advantages over the Sigma in sharpness throughout its range (probably), as well as (aperture) speed. I suspect that the speed of auto focus will be comparable, or only a negligible (probably imperceptible) difference.

So the comparison, in my mind, is the IQ and speed of focus between the Sigma and the Canon + 1.4X from 400mm to 560mm. And, if the Canon + 1.4X compares well with the Sigma from 400-560mm, is it worth almost $650 more?

Of course, if you already own a 1.4 extender, the cost difference between the 2 lenses is only $200 and the Canon will have the advantage over the Sigma from 100-400mm in both speed and IQ.

There's no perfect answer. Which is better will be dependent upon your usage and your pocketbook.

There is a difference between 1.4 TC's and 2.0 TC's I have owned both. Many folks believe, and you can also find this in online reviews by folks like Photozone, that although a 1.4 TC and be helpful that you are just about as well off cropping a photo as you are using a 2.0 TC.

Yes, cropping on a good sensor and using well applied pixel enlargement techniques and/or software is your friend !

If you have a body that supports AF at f8 - then the Canon W/1.4X would be MY choice. It is lighter/smaller than the Sigma and f5.6 @400mm vs f6.3.

The Sigma has the USB dock/software which is quite valuable ! - if you do not mind the weight and size.

You are ignoring the size/weight differences and the comprehensive USB dock adjustments of the Sigma ! ...
