An interview with DavidT,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been taking pictures for over 40 years - off and on. I was intrigued by the entire photography process from shooting black & white film, to loading the film on reels, developing the film, and making prints.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I currently photograph jewelry for my wife and her metalsmith friends.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Depending on the subject, it could be its uniqueness, use of bold colors, or its emotional impact. Overall composition plays a major factor as well.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
For this image, I used a green-glowing toy Star-Wars light saber. In a completely dark room (dressed in dark clothes and black gloves), I set the camera on a tripod for a 7-second exposure and waved the light saber with even flowing motions.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I used Lightroom for minor post-processing (e.g., cropping, noise reduction, etc.)

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I took a workshop on abstract photography where we learned about photographing reflections, bubbles, and light painting.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
It's always a surprise to see what comes out of light painting. You first need to have some idea of a pattern and work with the results from there.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A tripod. I probably have too many.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
For shooting jewelry, I almost always use a 90mm tilt-shift lens with an extension tube. The tilt feature is useful for getting the important plane of sharpness of close-up objects that have such a narrow depth-of-field.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I rely on ambient light and rarely use flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
