Using a small 90mm Meade telescope I can attach one of my Nikon cameras to it, question is do I use the D7100 or D750? The Meade will be like using a 1250mm lens as I cannot add an optic. It goes without saying the telescope has a special "sun" filter attached. I want to photograph sun spots and the D7100 will produce a larger image on its 24mp image than the D750 on its 24mp image. Would that be everyones choice?

Why not shoot both in turn?

The D7100 will give a smaller angle photo, but the D700 will have higher resolution and image quality.

I might go with the DX because of much lighter weight. What mount are you using for the Meade?
The LCD screens on both cams are the same resolution and since you will be focussing via LiveView, that shouldn't matter.

You pose an interesting question that I have grappled with for awhile.

Does a crop sensor camera such as the D7100 provide more resolution and better image quality than a full frame camera such as the D750 or D810.

Most people think it is the crop sensor because of its higher pixel density but I'm not so sure.

The resolution numbers of any lens is always higher on a full frame sensor of equal or greater size. Compare any decent lens on any review site that provides actual test data.

Also the image quality and noise is always better with the FF sensor because of the larger photosites when comparing similar sized sensors.

This would clearly argue in favor of the FF camera except that to get similar sized images you need to crop the FF image which lessens the IQ somewhat.

I'm inclined to go with the FF camera for best image in this scenario although I have not seen any formal reviews other than my own which my not be unbiased.

Any counter opinions are welcome.

The easy and safer way to see sun spots is to use your right angle image erector (if the sun is not overhead) and a low power eyepiece and a white card. Place the white card about a foot away from the eyepiece and focus the image of the sun onto the card. Sunspots are easily visible and can be photographed with just about any camera. If there any flaws in your sun filter there is a danger of serious injury to your eye or your camera's sensor if you look at the sun directly. And with respect to imaging the sun there is no real advantage to direct observation vs. the card method. Have fun.
