Nice LR update (hope everyone took advantage of $99.99 one year special at B&H).

My question today is about where everyone maintains their 'primary' photos. Right now I have about 10,000 photos and I simply maintain these on my laptop. But note: pre-2015 all photos were JPEG. Effective 2015, and using Lightroom, I will be shooting all photos in RAW and naturally image size gets pretty wild.

Sooooo ... since I don't have a polling option on this forum that I am aware of, let me ask the question:

Where do members maintain their photos using Lightroom - is it on an external USB drive or on the PC/Laptop. Naturally, backups are an external drive.

FYI: I see Rakuten http://www.rakuten.com/prod/seagate-backup-plus-stdr2000102-2tb-usb-3-0-portable-hard-drive-blue/257962320.html?sellerid=34922015&scid=em_Promotional_20150423Daily&adid=17654 has a Seagate 2 T USB 3.0 on sale for $78.00 today .

Photos are on external La Cie drive w thunderbolt connection for desktop. When traveling I put new photos on my elderly laptop and back them up on a tiny external USB drive. I don't try to sync the two, when traveling I use it mostly to review and cull. My real editing will take place when I get home to my nice big monitor.

For me, Lightroom image library is on an external thunderbolt connected drive, main backup is an external USB connected drive using Apple's Time Machine software for hourly, daily, weekly, full/incremental backups.

Secondary backup is another USB drive that stays in a fireproof/waterproof box and gets a complete mirror of the library and other important files monthly.

Third backup is image library uploaded to Amazon Prime free photo storage manually - only additions uploaded as needed weekly/monthly.

I also publish images to my flickr account, but that only contains finished select images, not the originals.

I keep one year's worth of photos on my main computer (a laptop with a reasonable sized hard drive). At the end of the year I move that year's photos to an external USB drive within Lightroom. The catalog stays on the laptop. I mirror/copy the USB drive to an identical drive and store that one in my office at work. Daily incremental updates are done to a network attached system. The external USB drive is also copied to the NAS as well. Still looking for a good way to get a third copy on the laptop photos to an offsite system other than using an online service. Possibly another External HD for just the current year that goes back and forth from home to office as needed.

250,000 photos on Thunderbolt connected LaCie drive. Backed up to Crash Plan, and Time machine.

A backup that is NOT off-site is NOT a backup, it's only a copy of your data!

I keep all my original photos on an external hard drive, backed up by another external hard drive. I have a third external to backup my computer files (non-photos). BTW hard drives are not very reliable and their warranty periods are short. I have found the most reliable are now made by G Technology that have Hitachi drives in them. Look at http://www.g-technology.com/photography
They are the best if you use Apple computers!

I have over 60,000 images in one catalog all dng, stored on a single 2TB external USB drive. The original CR2 raw files are stored on a second 2TB and jpegs and TIFFS are on a third drive. None of them are more then half full.

OK, gotta ask......Why in the world would you save two RAW formats and one TIFF?

I save the original out of camera as a secondary backup.

I went to B&H and only see LR6 at $149.00. Where did you find the $99.00 special or are you talking CC?

If you have an older version of Lightroom, you can upgrade to ver 6. It is available only from Adobe and is very difficult to find. Go to the link below, scroll down til you see Lightroom 6 for $149. Click on buy and the next screen will allow you to purchase the upgrade for $79 or full version, $149. Both are stand alone and not part of cc.. Good Luck
