I've been meaning to hike up the driveway to get some shots of the latest batch of foals. They're a couple of weeks old in some cases although the little chestnut appears younger. It's interesting that foals born early in the year come equipped with winter coats. I've noticed that summer foals are much less fuzzy.

I also took a couple of shots of some yearlings.

The owner raises these horses for racing. They'll go to auction when they're ready and hopefully become stakes winners at some point. They're all well bred. The owner said he originally paid $130,000 for the gray mare. Hopefully her babies have made the investment worth it.

I should also comment that the fence behind the old gray mare is not a good choice for horse fencing. It's too easy for them to get caught in it and cut up even when they have a large pasture to roam. There's always one that will find a way to get injured. In this case, they've put in some electric wiring to help keep the horses away, but that's not a guarantee.

Indeed, it is a "Lifestyle." The people I have met are all professionals; doctors, dentists, famous concert violinists, lawyers, movie stars, Saudis, Germans, Swiss, French, and American business owners of all kinds...they all love the horses. I have stood and talked with Patrick Swayze in a buffet line. He used to go to the same horse shows and we dropped by his stalls to chat quite often. Lynn Anderson, country singer, and others also attended the same shows.
And, race horse owners ARE indulging in the "Sport of Kings" and that is evident when going through the membership list.
Great emphasis in the Middle East is on "Racing." President Bush when visiting the King of Saudi Arabia was
before anything else taken to see the Arabians in the King's Stables. Owning horses has been enlightening and provided contacts I would never have had otherwise. It is a shame but in my local area many people think lowly of horse owners, only because they are not knowledgeable and have no idea what is going on out there. All they see are the local auctions where horses go for peanuts to people that can barely afford them. Sorry, but when you mentioned "Lifestyle" I couldn't help myself. :-D

I understand completely. I spent many hours at Arabian horse shows. It would have been a dream to meet Patrick Swayze. I've heard he was a class act. What a loss!

Yes, it's sad that people purchase horses and neglect them or let them starve because they run out of money. Even with all of the rescue programs, many don't make it.

It's nice to visit with you. I hope you'll stay in touch.

The babies are always fun to see and watch. There's a big "No Trespassing" sign at the beginning of their property. I don't think they really mind when I sneak in to get some shots, but I still feel funny about it. It might be appropriate to make the effort to get permission.

Thanks for the kind comment. I'm glad you liked that shot.

It's a nice thought but we live on rocky, forested slopes in western Washington. Not to mention expensive, time-consuming, and a pain in the neck when you want to go somewhere. Been there, done that, but miss all the rest. :D

Horses are not, you have to admit you live in a gorgeous part of the country.
