Wood Carving

Took a trip to New Orleans last summer and while in the French Quarter observed this wood carving which caught my attention. It was a square piece of wood about 24 inches thick. I had left my DSLR at home and took this image with a P & S. I liked how the sun had cast shadows into the recessed areas which seemed to magnify the depth of the carving. Whoever did this carving is very talented IMO. 8-)

I haven't been to NOLA since 1989. I'd love to go back! If you're ever there again, try bracketing and combining the pics (HDR). I'd bet you'd get tremendous detail in the shadows. Still looks cool, though. I can't imagine how long it took to make. The color of the carving almost makes it look like pottery clay. I hope to get some great architectural detail shots next June when I go to Israel.
