Computer running slow

I am trying to download info and do small things like editing etc but the computer always runs slow. I know people have received answers like clean up your computer etc. My question is....How do you clean up the computer. I just feel that I have too many programs running in the background or at startup. Can anybody help me without being critical

Do ctrl/alt delete see what processes are running under the Processes Tab to see what you and the computer can live without. Check your Startup eliminate what does not need to be running all the time. I use Wise Disk Cleaner, which has an optimizer program, and Wise Registry Cleaner been using two years with no problems best it's free.
