The more I read, the more confused I get.
Found lenses from $400 to $1200. How can I tell which ones will fit
Nikon D5500?
Thanks.
Ps... my phone does not like the search feature... on any forum. :0(

Lens must be AF-S to auto focus

AF-S Nikkor 85 mm 1.8G - you want this for your D5500. Excellent!

From Nikon's D5500 spec page:

Nikon F mount (with AF contacts)

Autofocus is available with AF-S and AF-I lenses; autofocus is not available with other type G and D lenses, AF lenses (IX NIKKOR and lenses for the F3AF are not supported), and AI-P lenses; non-CPU lenses can be used in mode M, but the camera exposure meter will not function

Dragon - You may be better served using your phone to make phone calls. Searching forums/websites for info is much easier on a tablet, laptop or a desktop. Just a thought...

True.. but since I live on the road in a truck, wifi is kinda hard to get. I can use the phone as a hot spot for the laptop , but limited data plan. Only get to the house every 6-8 weeks, not much time on the home puter.
Thot I'd tap into the "you guys know way more than I ever will" wealth here.

Dandi gave you the best answer: AF-S Nikkor 85 mm 1.8G. The lens runs about $500, it has a focus motor in the lens so it will work with your 5500 and it is a very sharp lens. I have one and love it.

Sincere apologies, Mary. Was unaware of your life style. My tablet is strictly WiFi (no contract except Internet access). That may not work for you unless truck stops have WiFi. Apart from that all you can do is try to get the largest smart phone (screen) you can with the best carrier/data plan. Keep on truckin' my friend!

You can save a few dollars on this at Nikon USA or Cameta Camera if you consider buying refurbished.

Yes, that's what I did, I got refurbished from Nikonusa, like new and $100 less.

Even tho some truck stops have wifi, and some even charge, it's sooooo slow it's almost useless. There are still spots in the country where there's no 4g or even 3g, or even phone service. So although I have a reasonable data plan, it's way to easy to spend too hours websurfing.... I prefer to to that at home. So that's why I threw out the question. But thanks for the advice.

One advantage of asking here, similar to my Wrangler forum and knitting forum... you guys and gals are so picky, the info is way more accurate than ads or reviews on the net. Aloha!

Don't have a 5500 yet. Was thinking about upgrading from my 5100... I have a 35 prime and a 55-200 zoom.
and my old film Canons.... but digital is so much easier with space limited travel.
If I'm somewhat correct, the 85 mm is close to full frame 100 mm lens
was also looking at Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED as a sort of wide angle.
I pbly could get alone fine with just the 2 lens I have now, but.... :o)
It's the gear acquisition thing again..... I won't even tell you haw much I have spent on knitting needles and yarn since I took that up again.... but I am knitting my own socks!

I also have D5100 and not thinking about upgrading. d5100 + 35mm, 50mm and 85mm 1.8 produce images of a very good quality.
