I didn't know there was such a thing. My first Nikon flash was the SB600.

The price is good, and it's TTL.

Its a very good little flash at the price. S big step up over the SB-300, plus it has a video light for the video shooters to take advantage of.

Ok I understand... is anyone here using one? I guess I would like to hear or really see some results. I have several speed lights, including the sb400. I use that for sometimes when I don't need a lot of power just a little fill light in close shooting. This SB500 has some neat features. I don't know if I can justify getting the SB500 over just using my SB600 and not packing so small. Not to worry I am sure I will find an excuse to get one :) thanx!

Just spent 4 days at a corporate meeting using the SB500 exclusively, in order to compare it to my Nissin Di866 (which i love). I took around 400-500 pics with it using two lithium ion batteries, which never needed replacing. It didnt work quite as well for the long distance shots (>40 ft) as was expected, but performed admirably for everything else. I seemed to get more red-eye issues than with the Nissin, but less than with the pop-up. The compact nature of the flash was a bonus, as i was able to store it discreetly when not needed. I've also used it with the Nikon creative lighting system as a slave, and was pleased with the results. In fact, that was the original reason for purchasing it.
The next time I use it, I will alternate with the Nissin to get a clearer perspective. At this point, I am pleased with the purchase.

Thanks for the feed back. I am loving this flash. As far as distance goes I recently took a picture of a friend sitting by a pool in bright sun (with out flash and then with). I was around 25ft from my target. The SB500 in ttl did the job. Little and discreet for sure. The battery life is amazing.
