I just got the Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM len. I have taken a couple of pictures and the Metadata displays aperture as F/4.5 for every picture I taken. This is showing up in Lightroom 5. Now I thought that this lens aperture is set F/4 through-out the focal range. So why am I seeing F/4.5 - did I get it wrong?

you adjusted the aperture - put it back to 4 on your camera. Do you know how to adjust it? Were you on automatic mode?

Ps: f4 is the widest aperture, but you can change that for a deeper depth of field like when you shoot a landscape shot. It does not mean that every shot will always and only be F4

You got a great lens, post a picture and check store original so we can see it.

f/4 is the widest aperture the lens can achieve (and remains the widest aperture throughout the range of focal lengths), but it is not the only aperture the lens can achieve. Did you get a booklet with the lens? That should tell you what the minimum aperture is, probably in the f/16 to f/32 range.

Here are the specs for that lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/397662-USA/Canon_0344B002AA_24_105mm_f_4L_IS_USM.html
Aperture f/4-f/22
The instruction leaflet also states f/22 as the minimum aperture for this lens:

Seems like you are repeating similar text or focusing on the same topic of your previous post. If you basically don't like the lens and are looking for a reason, UHH has a great Classified section that will help you dispose of it. Then you can use UHH's Search function and other online resources to identify an alternative that will better suit your needs. Good luck and best wishes. /Ralph

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking first of all the widest aperture is f4 the smallest is f32. Why you display f4.5 is beyond my understanding unless your software has a bug in it?

Or unless he and/or the camera set it to f/4.5

How can that be the lens has a max f stop of f4. The camera has no f stops or am I missing something? Does not the camera get its information from the lens?

The larger (wider) the aperture, the lower the f-stop. The smaller the aperture, the larger the f-stop. f/4 is a larger aperture than f/5.6, which is larger than f/8, etc. f/22 is a smaller aperture than f/16, which is smaller than f/11. The f/4 on your lens indicates that the widest it can be opened is f/4, not that it is only aperture that the lens can be set at. Thus, your lens can be used at f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22 and all intermediate f-stops. I hope this helps.

I think you did not understand what I wrote. I think I was clear about it, his lens was only capable of opening up to f4 and down to f32.
