Abstract Triptic

A while back, my frame builder messed up on an order for three 20x24 frames, and made three 20x20 instead. Rather than completely waste them, he just gave them to me (I do a lot of business with him). Since then, I have been trying to figure out what I might use them for, as I have generally not made square format images before.

Anyway, I was playing around today with some abstracts I had shot at a craft market in Tubac, AZ recently, and wondered if I could create some type of abstract triptic set.

While I know we are limited to single images in this section of the forum, I am posting the triptic as if it were a single image as that is how it would be presented. Hopefully the mods will understand the logic of this and allow it to stand.

I'm interested in how people react. I realize many do not care for abstracts of this type, but I am interested in how people perceive the approach, order, concept, etc.

Have at it. :-D

hi, Jim,
I think your three images work extremely well as a tryptych. you display them here as 1,2,3 ( left to right).
My rather simplistic approach would be to arrange them 1,3,2 to take advantage of #3's having the least sense or a lateralizing pattern...it is more summetrical than #1 and #2 which both would give me the impression of "leaning" toward the center.
That said, I must admit i'd rather have those three on a wall in any order, than not not have them hanging.
Nicely done.

Dave

Thanks for that feedback, Dave. It is helpful. Finding the best order is an important consideration when creating a triptych. I had desided on the order based on #2 having areas of pink/magenta that is lacking in the other two, however I certainly see the logic in the order you suggest based more on form. I'll be sure to give that a close look when I get the final full sized prints made. These were the first three I tried, so it is not definite that these will constitute the final three, but I'm glad to hear the concept worked for someone!

For me it would be 1,2,3 for the colours, or 2,1,3 for the blacks.

Mmmmm Perceive the approach I would hope rather tongue in cheek. I probably would hate to think a great photographer like you treated them as seriously as your other recent superb posts.
Concept Im not gonna go there my friend.
Order Thats a great question and one I would certainly have asked being blessed with the sense of humour I was born with. I can see this hanging on a wall and some guy in a corduroy jacket with leather elbow patches deep in conversation with his rather stout lady friend adorned in a Laura Ashley print dress and wearing mens flat sandals. Im sure they could devote some considerable time debating the order in which they should be hung all the while stroking their chins very thoughtfully.
Priceless my man simply priceless.
I love your stuff Jim but this does not float my boat.
If its any consolation Im pretty damn sure Jackson Pollock did not take his daubs as seriously as others and I reckon he produced his paintings with a big smile on his face. I hope you framed this set in the same way

From one Jim to another, get rid of #3 and re-title it the "dynamic duo" - or some such.

Then switch the middle one with the one on the left - or more simply, reverse the two remaining images. I think that would be a stronger presentation.

I have several of these triptychs but haven't posted them for fear of violating the one image rule?

Too bad Pollock had to kill two girls in ending his own life.

Besides drip painting Pollock did some pretty interesting stuff. There are probably better sites displaying his pre-drip perid but here is one that has a lot ot offer:

As the proud owner of a number of corduroy jackets with leather elbow patches I can assure you their conversation would be centered on the how these pieces speak to the bleakness of life and man's endless struggle to survive. Of course they would be wrong, but what can one expect from .......... peasants. And of course, if they bought them they'd probably hang them in the wrong order and completely disturb the feng shui of the room. Peasants!

I have actually done a few abstracts close ups of blown glass that have done very well both competitively and sales wise. Unfortunately I find creating abstracts to be way more of a hit or miss than any other subject. Hard to know which will catch people's eye, and even then abstracts yield the widest range of reactions.

In this case, I'm really looking to fill those three square frames. I'm after abstracts primarily because I need a few more for sales. Hopefully I'll find three abstracts that do the trick but also get primarily positive reactions. We'll see. These may or may not be them.

Thanks for the feedback. So far, there has not been much comment on which, if any, of the images might be eliminated. It's possible all three may go! You seem to align with my wife who immediately dismissed #3. I have a number of exposures yet to go over; I may find another that logically completes the set. We'll see.

I think this is an awesome triptych. If you don't frame them, please PM me for a buy!!!!

What I like about this present order is that more and more of the flower is seen as we look from left to right, and that 1 and 3 are both "leaning," or have their "weights," toward the center.

I would like to volunteer Jim to be the front man at the sales desk of your show. Ex National Sales Manager of Brother industries UK so sales is not a problem.
My delight of seeing Mr Corduroy jacket walk away with one of your thought compelling abstracts under his arm would only be made more pleasurable by seeing his hard earned dollars in your till.
My peels of laughter about what comments the customers have made would Im sure make for a pleasant evening when the gallery closes.
Im sure it would be fun.

Pollock was a lucky guy with his "art". Was not the first and will not be the last. A Saatchi type figure either begins to talk in terms of the validity of the pieces or to start a trend buys one and then sits back to reap the benefits. The "artist" rides the financial wave and everybody is happy. Does not however make the product good in anyway. That still remains a bunch of mindless daubs enthusiastically reviewed by an intelligentsia desperate to sound knowledgeable.
Long may it continue as it helps me laugh my butt off.

I'll certainly consider you for the position, but I must make you aware of a few requirements. No mullets. You must be able to tell customers, "The artist is of the west coast neo-surrealist existential school", and "All images are printed on 100% gluten free, recycled papers" with a straight face. When I snap, I expect my venti mocha to appear within the minute. Paying for your services is optional and determined entirely by my mood at the time.

When can you start?
