nikkor 18-200mm 3.5-5.6G ED VR

Could I have some feedback on this lens please. I was about to buy a used version but a speaker at our local camera club last night said it was not a sharp lens.

There are two different, virtually identical versions of this lens. The Nikon USA site is now showing only the newer version, and the priced has dropped from about $900 to $600. The older version didn't have a barrel lock, so you got some serious creep when you carried it on a strap with the lens facing down. Make sure you understand which one you are thinking about buying.

I had the older version and liked it a lot. Was it a perfect lens, with spectacular IQ and sensational edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity? Of course not, but it was very nice walkaround lens. I only sold mine to get the 18-300mm when I went to Alaska and wanted the extra range.

I suspect that even at the $600 new price, this is a good buy.

I do not own one but I have used one. The speaker at your camera club is right, it is not a sharp lens to make murals.
I seriously question if you will see a big difference compared to other "sharper" lenses at enlargements below 13x19 and I am sure you do not enlarge to that size often.
Believe me, most probably for your needs the lens will do a remarkable job with all the sharpness you will ever need.
The majority of modern lenses do a remarkable job when the photographer does his part.

I had one. Like most superzoom lenses it lost some sharpness at the long end. I never print larger than 8.5x11, and I was able to make beautiful prints from shots taken at 200mm even with moderate cropping. I now use a Sigma 18-300 which I find sharper than the Nikon 18-200. Unless you make very large prints or do a lot of cropping or unless you are a pixel peeper I think you would be happy with either the Nikon 18-200, Nikon 18-300, or Sigma 18-300. That's just my opinion like the person who told you that it wasn't a sharp lens was giving you his opinion. Sharpness can be measured objectively, but what one considers to be sharp enough is subjective.

Many thanks for the feedback, As I wanted a general walkabout lens I will now be happier to go ahead with the purchase.

If you do your part the lens will serve you well.

I have one and I would agree with your club speaker. It's OK, but not great. A little soft at some focal lengths. Not uncommon for an 11x lens.

I have used my Nikkor 18-200 for several years now. It's my carry around lens and it has served me well. I seem to have the best results at certain apertures and focal lengths. F8 & F9 seem to have great sharpness. And I have positive results at certain focal lengths as well. If you're looking for tack sharpness then by a prime lense. I have never used another manufacturer's lense of this type so I can not offer a comparison.

I own this lens and have used it extensively, making many 13x19 inch prints. That seems to be the limit, even with very careful technique.

The lens is a little soft at the long end and cannot match a "pro" lens at almost any focal length, though it comes close in the mid-range and at smaller apertures. However, it is an absolute winner because of its versatility, which allows you to walk around all day with just one lens.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I had this lens and only sold it because I went to an FX camera. For an all purpose "walk around" lens, you won't be sorry.

I own this lens and yes it's a little soft at 200mm and yes it will creep on you but my biggest thing is that the varying stops I always seem to need a larger aperture (2.8)at any focal length that I'm at,very frustrating.

Got the Sigma 18-200 and use it on a D3100 (manual focus) and D90...nice on both, cheaper and sharper than the Nikkor, I think.

I have the new one, paid $850 two years ago, it is the 18-200 VR ll. It is a great lens with a lens lock. It was the only lens I took to Kauai, for ten days, which included a private 'doors off' helicopter flight (just my wife and I). No loose objects with the doors off so no lens changing. Price since has dropped to $560+/-. Captured many fabulous images, now on my walls.

Originally I got the Tamron 18-200 and I was not happy with it. I returned and got the Nikkor 18-200 1:35-56 DX-VR that is by far a better lens than the Tamron. I have been using it for two years and I do not think I will need any other lens for what I am doing.
