My 8 year old 24 inch iMac has lately been freezing and crashing when I process my images. I use Lr to Ps or DxO Optics Pro, then to Nik.
Any advice?
I have 8gb Ram and a 1tb hard drive (upgraded years ago).
I had the same problem on my 20". It was bad RAM. remove 1 stick at a time and work with only 4GB of ram. If one stick of ram is marginal that is the only way to isolate it.
I'd suggest you get a large Firewire800 Powered external drive. Move all your RAW images to this drive (do it in Lightroom so the program will know where they are). When working with images from your D800 set up Lightroom to store the DNGs on the External FW800 drive. Be sure to close all other programs when working in Lightroom or PS, such as Safari, Mail, and Word Processing, etc. Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utilities on your internal drive regularly, and before and after each software install. If this does not speed things up you need to seriously consider upgrading to a 27"iMac with an i7 quad core processor and 32GB of memory plus a SSD as a main drive( it doesn't have to be more than 500GB as it'll only run your Apps and System). All other Storage would be on Thunderbolt external drives. And do set up a back up system for your photos + and external back up too if you care about your data
