I wonder why Canon uses the "AV" (Aperture Priority) rather then just using AP.
The same for "TV" (Shutter Priority) rather then just SP.
M stands for Manual and P stands for Program. So why not just call
AV and TV for what they are?

Because they are
Values. Aperture and Time.
But, why is still a good question :thumbup:

because NIKON owners being intelligent, wise and sexy, know instinctively they are values, s and a make much more sense. canon owners on the other hand being more dimwitted (obviously otherwise they would own nikons) need the extra help!!!!!!!!! no i am not serious, just being a trouble maker and riot starter. gee that makes me qualified to lead the occupy movement.

Couldn't have said it better myself, sinatraman.

I do not know if it has to do with intelligents, but I just met a Nikon owner who only is able to make a simple calculation with a calculator. Normally speaking simple calculation is done by head.
In the old days, between 1970 to 1980 the Nikons were much better than Canon. Today these two are coming very close in quality. I think that the Nikon lens might still be a little better than the Canon, but Canon's technology is better than Nikon. But both the differences in quality are not notice by the average Forum member.
In the old days I worked with the Nikon F2 and FE. Today I work with Canon, after having sold my Hasselblad.

ronny, in all seriousness, the quality of all the major brands has reached parity. the only dog cameras out there are holgas and dianas, but the are deliberately made that way. i use a cannon scanner, had a cannon p+s before replacing it with a nikon. and in the early days of my youth, owned an ae-1. regret pawning it. what i like about canon is they keep the enginers at nikon from getting too complacent. if i was going to start all over, i would probably choose pentax, or the new olympus coming out that looks like a digital om-1. nikon taking the af motor out of their lower end dslrs forcing you to buy afs lenses really hacks me off. what they are doinfg to independent camera repair places including some bigges like keh is insane. apparently the same accountants that almost drove GM under are now working for nikon.
AV = A-Mode (Aperture priority)
TV = S-Mode (Speed priority)
Also AV/TV is Canon creepy way to designate something differently just because. (There maybe a possibility of copyrights over naming the settings)
Either mode work well IF and ONLY IF you disable the auto ISO.
There is a matter of preference. Personally A-Mode is best if I do not go full manual. My reasoning is that I need to control the DOF at all times so that the subject of my attention is always in focus where I want it. S-mode (TV for crazy canon folks) does not offer this luxury, unless you check and check... Give me A-Mode anytime and screw S-Mode. If I want an aperture and a speed, I play with the ISO, a flexibility we did not have in film with the glaring exception of a couple of films that could adapt.
Of note: Some compacts have a 'TV' mode and the icon of a television. This setting is to capture a screen at it's fullest w/o having to care about the interlaced image projected onto a TV display (or computer for that matter)
