Once you know where the lighthouses are and have decided which ones you want to shoot, aim for sunrise/sunset times, when the light is best and the crowds are smaller. Bring a tripod and some kind of folding chair, drinks, snacks. You might be able to get two lighthouses shot AM and PM, depending where they're located, but don't push it.

I've been watching DVDs by Joel Sartore (Nat Geo), and he emphasizes taking your time and getting lots of shots around sunrise and sunset. I hope you post some when you return.

I was last there in October '14 - I'm 79, and had no problems of stamina, because other than being superman, there are roads and parking near many/most. The recommendation for Acadia (add Bay of Fundy) is right on, but I wandered up the coast from Connecticut to Canada, and there were many photo ops including Lighthouses. I disagree with Jerry about times though - mornings are great on the East Coast, but evenings don't work too well because the lighthouses and near - shore ocean and rocky coast are generally shaded. Mid-day works pretty well in many rocky areas because harsh shadows are diminished with overhead light. HDR was sometimes helpful. Some of my best shots were in windy or stormy weather, when the waves are crashing or there were interesting cloud formations.

I also suggest boat rides, available in several places. The views are quite different from those ashore.

Steven, that's great advice for a mosquito hater.

Nubble Lighthouse, York/York Beach, south of Portland near the New Hampshire border. After taking the iconic photo from the upper parking lot, walk to the other end and see the rather easy path to rocks below. Photograph from the rocks for a totally different lighthouse. In August you'll have to avoid the people sitting on the rocks but it can be done!

I am planning a trip to Maine for August. I'm specifically interested in photographing lighthouses. Will fly into Portland and will have a week to spend there. Do any of you have advice for picturesque opportunities? A caveat, we are in our mid to late 70's, but without limitations except for stamina.
Years ago, 1964, I took shots of East Quoddy Point light and Bass Harbor light. Several years ago, I took out the old slides from 1964, massaged them with Photoshop Elements and have them in our home office. Thinking of adding to them.

If you want an interesting shot, take a powerful handheld LED light. I have one made by Stanley that is 750 lumens which is quite bright. Go to around dusk and paint the Nubble Light. The deep blue, red light and white structures make for a nice combination.

As long as you are in the Portland area the infamous Portland Light is must. It's actually on Cape Elizabeth. And only a few miles from there is "Two Lights" - small but worth the few miles.

Several of us from the UHH family are going to meet in Portland this September.
Have fun on your trip and I will be looking forward to seeing your photos.

Daddy Bear,

That photo is, without a doubt, one of the very best I've ever seen of Portland Head Light! Thanks for posting it.
