Looking at the runners I would say it's coming down.

Right. That's what I thought. Also, notice the trim piece next to each step.
Down.
If kitty is climbing up, I would hate to walk down those stairs if the overhead light was burned out. Too easy to trip on the trim and tumble!
How many stairs are made with the riser coming up higher than the step??? Aren't risers usually decorated, not the steps?

Though the optical illusion of the week isnt quite as popular or as polarizing as The Dress, thousands of people have weighed in on the directionally ambiguous feline over the past week.
The grainy photograph of a cat traversing a set of stairs will probably divide opinions, depending on whether you think the photographer is looking down at the animal, or up at it, from below.

The consensus on content aggregator 9gag seems to be that the cat is going down. The patterned part is likely the back of the stairs, one user said, because the thin part of step looks like a wood slat that you would step on.
Another user said a cat would have its tail pointed down if it were running up the stairs.
Though the details are difficult to glean from the low-definition image, dont let that stop the debate. Are you on team up or team down?

There is no trick here, if you ever looked close at a set of steps before it would be obvious to you the cat is coming down. I've built enough steps to know.

I have to agree with your assessment because I've walked up and down lots of steps.
Down because of the position of the thread. But it took a couple of seconds to notice that.
But you know, and you don't see this a lot. there are stairs of concrete where the front face of the step comes up over the thread. I see this in emergency stairwells. fire exits in buildings. Don't know why, they hurt your feet.
This has gone viral on Facebook! I vote down.
I think it is going up, why, look at where the cat has come from it looks like a side walk of some sorts.

Down, the overhang of the tread gives this away.
