Interesting to see the impact of smartphones on camera sales.

It would be more interesting to see sales by company. With Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and Samsung finding room to innovate (with cameras like the A7s, GH4, LX100, OM-D and NX-1) are they gaining over Nikon and Canon?

Very interesting!

I guess reports of the death of the dSLR are premature! :-)
dSLR and mirrorless are very stable, but he compact digital took a serious dive.

That makes sense, comparable quality and the phones are much more convenient.

Thanks for finding this and sharing :-D

As the article says, a high correlation doesn't prove cause and effect. Obviously though camera phones have eaten into camera sales. It's a pretty safe guess that camera phones are responsible for most of the decline in sales of P&S cameras which they compete most directly with. It's harder to gage their effect on more advanced cameras. A decline in DSLR sales for example could be due to other factors such as saturation of the market, lack of sufficient advances in new models to cause people to replace their current DSLR, and competition from ILC cameras.

Haven't we discussed this to death several times already?

There are very few camera phones that will tempt anyone who uses a DSLR to switch over.

Sony offers a couple of products designed to be used WITH cell phones that might come close, but you can't control the process with a cell phone in any way close to similar to what you can do with a DSLR. And the image quality of even the best camera phone is still light years behind what you get from 2nd generation DSLRs... and we are currently on the 5th generation. ;)

Nikon and Canon have been recognized as the Gold Standards. The other manufacturers are closing the gap. This will give high end shooters more choice and that's a good thing

I don't think it is an impact on camera sales at all - smartphones come with a cheapie picture capture feature whether it is wanted or not. Does anyone use a smartphone for pro photog or serious novice work?

 :? :?: :?

Did you see the graph?!

It obviously has had an impact, just mostly on compact digital, which after all, is what smartphones are.

Not quite sure what you point is. Nikon and Canon have been industry leaders for years and you post a subjective one time award for Samsung??? Popular Photography named Nikon D750 the Camera of the Year yet there are many things not to like about it. Across the broad range of products Nikon and Canon still lead the field but the gap is closing

How many people have you heard of who said to themselves "I want to be a photographer, I guess I should buy a phone"?
Everyone who buys a phone these days automatically gets a camera, whether they want one or not, it's a standard feature. No I can see where it would hurt P&S camera sales, but those serious about photography are still going to buy a bridge, mirrorless, or slr camera.

so true!

My phone has a really bad (really ) camera.
BUT, it does what I want for a phone ;-)
We haven't touched our P&S cameras for months (maybe years?)

Pretty soon it'll be "I want to be a photographer, I guess I should buy an Apple Watch"
:-D

I use my P&S camera on every vacation, when I'm kayaking and don't want 8 lbs of camera hanging around my neck and possibly ending up in the water. I use a high end Canon and LUMIX P&S. There is still a place for these cameras. My iPhone and iPad don't compete.

I silently chuckle to myself when I see someone shooting their entire vacation on their smartphone

My point is that I think Nikon and Canon may be slipping with their grip on the "gold standard". Enough innovation is coming from electronics companies like Sony, Panasonic and Samsung that they get gold awards too. Remember Kodak? Or Blackberry?

FWIW, I had a love affair with Nikon in the film area that ended up filling a couple shelves with stuff. Even had multiple lenses for my Nikonos!
