I've been playing around recently with creating some stylized monochrome images. Not totally abstract, but not representational either. Curious as to some first impressions.
More interested in aesthetic reactions than any pixel-peeping.
Thanks in advance.

I love it Jim. I really like how the crisp textures and tones fade off to white. I like the composition. Possibly the shadow looks a little harsh.

Your composition is lovely. I like the semi-abstract concept. It will make a wonderful piece of wall art if the noise/graininess is soft and subtle in the gray areas.

Thank you both for your comments.

I think the texture (graininess especially) and contrast are going to be the key to getting this image the way I envision it. I want the tonal range to be wide enough, but I don't want the contrast to get too pronounced either.

Nice to hear that the composition was pleasing. I'm going for a somewhat minimalist approach. A question remains as to how well this will transfer over to a larger print.

Its difficult without the download enabled to make a final judgement but from what I see the shadows on the main rock could do with taking back a tad and possibly a little more texture on the right hand side. The white there is kinda intrusive.
Composition is perfect. You mention printing so is this an item you hope to sell?
If that is the case my feelings are there is a lot of stuff around like this (maybe not on the Hog) and Im not sure it grabs the attention or retains the interest enough to be a commercial success. Stylized monochrome abstract type works are quite common It is very nice and if your producing this for a client you only have the one person to please.

There is a lot of art and photographs of every kind around. If you want to make a business of it you need to become an expert at marketing your images as well as creating them.

Bill, I did a 12x16 (for matting 16x20) and agree the image needs to be dialed back slightly; a few places do come over as having too much contrast. I'll play with bringing up a bit more texture on the right. This was a quick "first look"; I'll consider other's reactions when I sit down to do a final rendition.

I generally don't sell my monochromes at shows, but do make some of them available on my website. Monochromes are usually for entered in my local club competitions, so I do them regularly, but often not with sales in mind.

JIm, I'm sorry .. I forgot to add that I know you're an expert in the marketing as well. I was just making that point that there is a lot of really bad art that sells because someone marketed it well, and then there are amazing works of art that don't ever get much attention.

I am far from an expert. I just keep working at making better images, and put in the time needed to sell some of them. :-)
