Dave: I spent a few minutes with Photos last night after the 10.10.3 update, I came to the conclusion within a few minutes that it was really aimed at iPhone shooters with sharing the images across all apple devices with iCloud... the editing seemed very simplistic, meant for people who only want to do a one click auto fix and cropping.

Not for people who used Aperture or Lightroom indeed.

Still awaiting Lightroom 6 here ;)

I learned from Donald Gallagher above that a newer version-6 of Lightroom is expected soon. I looked in my application folder and found that Lightroom-4 is still on my computer. I had bought it a few years ago but gave up on the learning curve and stuck with Aperture.

As soon as LR-6 is announced I'll upgrade or buy as necessary, bite the bullet, migrate my images from Aperture to LR-6 and learn it.

I am doing that now--using LR for storing and photoshop for editing, gradually working into LR---bought the $9.99 per month dear!

Very sorry to loose Aperture

I suppose I could migrate the photos from Aperture into Lightroom-4 right now. Later, when LR-6 comes out I could upgrade. The problem is, from what I read, the migration of modified images from Aperture do not easily migrate into into LR-4 while maintaining adjustments. I wonder if LR-6 will provide a more seamless migration from Aperture into LR-6? After all, Apple has tossed in the towel and Adobe understands that a lot of people will be transferring their photos over to their photos over to their program. I'm hoping LR-6 improves the migration process.

Like you I did most of my manipulations in PS and sent the final image back to LR in both TIFF and JPG formats. Very modest changes, if any, were performed in Aperture.

I was in the BETA test program on my computer and when the second 10.10.2 came out I was stupid enough to allow my Aperture library to be moved to Photos - Man am I SORRY I let that happen - cause you CANNOT use that library again in Aperture - I'm surprised that my experience was not passed along to ALL on the HOG. I am a LR5 user and will =never allow any of my pictures to be captured by APPLE. They are NOT interested in folks that like to due a reasonable good job of making their pictures look Good. I have been a big Apple supporter for some time, but now, I don't think they have our best interest in mind. So sad that Microsoft is so bad and so full of holes that any Jr High hacker can cause real problems and Apple is disc ing us. Such is life any more

Really :?: :?: :?: :!: :!: :!:

It did not work that way for me!

When I dragged my Aperture library on top of the Picture icon that was on my launch pad, it created a new Library on my external HD (That's where I had my Aperture library). I ended up with both an Aperture AND Picture library on the same external HD. Both were about a half TB in size. They worked independently of each other.

After I evaluated Photos, I removed it from my launch pad. I then moved the Photos library to trash and later deleted it. Aperture still works for me. When LR-6 comes out (Any day now, from what I read), I'll migrate my Aperture library into LR.

Right now Aperture is working the way it always has. From what I read read on the Internet, LR-6 will have a very user friendly interface with DxO Optics Pro. That is important to me because I almost always use DxO to process my RAW files prior to saving them as both TIFF and JPG.

I'm sorry to learn that you had such a horrible experience. Perhaps that was because you were working with a BETA version? Now, I'm glad I waited for the final version.

"Picture" is no longer on my launch pad.

I've been using Aperture for years, after I graduated from iPhoto because it wasn't meeting my needs. Of course, I was quite alarmed when I heard Apple was going to do away with Aperture, as I have tens of thousands of photos in my Aperture library. And from what I read here Photos would be a step toward a somewhat improved, but not completely improved, iPhoto.

A couple of years back I signed up for a class in Photoshop at my local community college. However, I quickly discovered that it was not nearly as intuitive as Aperture and decided that Photoshop was not the tool for me so I dropped the class and continued along happily using Aperture – until I got word of the changes Apple had planned.

So now I have a few questions which I hope knowledgeable people on this board can answer.

1. Am I correct in understanding that installing the next version of the OS will automatically replace iPhoto with Photos and move my iPhoto library into Photos?

No.

2. Will the installation automatically do the same with my Aperture library or will it remain untouched until I decide to move my library to Photos (right now it seems highly unlikely to me that I would do that)?

No.

Of course, question #2 is critical to me. I would like to know that my Aperture library is not going to be affected by a system upgrade, otherwise I feel like Apple has really screwed me over (and other Aperture users as well!). Although I'm already feeling the Apple screwdriver bearing down on me (and others like me)!

Until I get a response I'm not doing any upgrades to my system…

Thanks for your help!

This is incorrect. I was a beta tester too. The same thing happened to me in the early Beta version. The original Aperture lib is still there and untouched. Aperture still works.

And when your test beta software you should first have backed up your system including your libraries, libraries, just like Appke said to do, in the beta test agreement you signed.

I think you somehow made a mistake while posting your questions. I tried to correct your mistake as I perceived it.

No, downloading the OS will not destroy Aperture. You can continue to use it as long as you want.

I never used iPhoto and can't help you there.

Photos doesn't move images. Only you CAN move images.

Photos, like iPhoto will copy items to the Photos library? If ypu don't want that,
then open Photos-> Preferences and uncheck the box next to "copy items to the photos library".

You want to delete Photos? (1) Drag it off the dock (2) delete PHOTOS it from the Applications directory.

Also notice there isn't anything on the edit to straighten out your photo

Thanks, Dave. I've not received an upgrade notice yet. Is a review forth-coming?

I didn't believe this, so I had to go looking for it right away - turns out I rather like how the Straighten works...
