I thought I would be able to at least export an image to PhotoShop and edit it there, and return the edited image to "Photos". Apparently not!
It might be me. I'll make a trip to the Apple store and take a class and ask a lot of questions. So far I'm very disappointed!
I think Apples "Photo" program is meant for boys and girls and grandmothers, not the kind of folks who visit UHH.
I liked Aperture but it Appears that Apple is forcing me into Light room.

Dave: I spent a few minutes with Photos last night after the 10.10.3 update, I came to the conclusion within a few minutes that it was really aimed at iPhone shooters with sharing the images across all apple devices with iCloud... the editing seemed very simplistic, meant for people who only want to do a one click auto fix and cropping.
Not for people who used Aperture or Lightroom indeed.
Still awaiting Lightroom 6 here ;)

It is definitely not for this grandmother!
It looks like snapseed with control bars to me. I'll stick with Lightroom.

I did not intend to disparage grandmothers.
I was married to one.
This is a real back eye for Apple :!:
Who is ever going to trust a company that drops support for a loyal customer base like Aperture had :?:

Thought it was funny. Here's the bright side: it is intuitive for social media users so we may be able to teach our adult children to edit their own photos and we won't have to do it for them any more.

It is as I worried - sadly, not the first time Apple did this. Ask the folks who used to love Final Cut Pro before Apple essentially killed it...
I'm going to check into Capture One as well...
I installed Photos six weeks ago with the first beta version of 10.10.3 and quickly came to the conclusion that it is really just an upgrade for iPhoto. Doesn't hold a candle to Aperture, Lightroom or Photoshop. I'm sticking with the $9.95/mo. Adobe photo suite rental. If you use as Aperture as your primary photo editor, don't uninstall it. You won't find Photos to be an acceptable substitute.

I never did use Aperture as my "primary photo editor." I did use it as a place to store and organize my photos. I preferred to do the processing with a small cluster of other programs that included DxO, CS5, and Nik filters. Photos does not provide an interface to the programs I really like to use the way Aperture did/does.
I was hoping that because I used other programs to edit my images, that Photos would be okay, even with limited editing. It's not. :-(
The few simple tools they provide do work very well and quickly. I'll give them that. :|
Installed it yesterday. I had seen enough before this to switch to Capture One. In any case, I am happy I did. The new Photos was really nice in what it did. Really nice photo organization, the adjustments when I played with them, gave really pretty pleasing results. There are many more adjustments than I thought, as you can add many in that aren't obvious at first glance.
That said, its a disappointment that this is farther away from Aperture and Lightroom than I would have expected. No local adjustments, no layers, it wasn't obvious that you could apply adjustment across multiple files easily, too many predefined styles that look like hipster Instagram crap, no transfer to plug-ins (at least that I could find). So I feel like I made a really good decision going to Capture One (and DXO for really noisy photos).
I will use photos to store and archive my old Aperture library (in its new Photo library form). It seems good for that limited purpose. I will trash Aperture and its library so I don't have 2X files.

When I turned on my Apple computer today I got a message that new software is available for download. A new icon appeared on my launchpad. It's Photos!
It was not obvious how to import all the images that are being managed by Aperture into Photos. :?:
I keep my images on an external drive. I closed both Aperture and Photos. I then opened the icon for my external drive on my desktop. I then dragged "Aperture Library" on top of the new Photo icon on my launchpad. Something is happening, I think it's working!!! It's reporting that it's 32% done with "Preparing Library".
This seems to be working.

I'm going to set the computer down and not touch it while it's doing it's thing.
See you later. :)

Thank you for being our Apple grandfather guinea pig photos tester, I really appreciate the info you posted, I was almost ready to click the terrible pop up button to photos, but you have saved the day! I hope other UHH members have additional comments on this upgrade . It's tough for us older generation to relate to apples interest in satisfying the "kids" and their cell phone photos..
Looks like the monthly payment for Lightroom and Photoshop is not so bad after all. Thanks for the post!!!
Photos is no Aperture. Sadly Apple killed a really nice photo tool and handed the market back to Adobe. I've yet to find a LR alternative that has the simplicity of Aperture and the full line of camera support.
Minnie, A wise choice. I down loaded the new Photo's and was disappointed...will stick with Lightroom.
I don't want to sound like a prude but I wouldn't have high expectations on a freebie although I know there are exceptions to the rule.
I can also see it catering to smartphones. They are the majority and to please the masses is good politics.

I do not think you will find it much of a curve Dave.... from what I saw it was not even close to an Aperture replacement - might be better than iPhoto, but for me was too "simplistic". I am sure it will find thousands of users though that will love the iCloud subscription needs ;)
After going through the tour, etc. with Photos, this app is designed more for people who take pics and have a desire for some basic but powerful editing tools.....it could be enough but doesn't come close to the editing programs that I have learned that we all use here on a daily basis. It is a great improvement to iPhoto but not meant to be a professional photo editing app.
