I'm making a two week trip to NY and DC and want to make sure I take plenty of storage cards for my Canon, maybe 6-8 cards. What cards do you recommend? 64 MG? I plan to shoot mostly in RAW.

I may be going out on a limb here, but you should be able to buy an SD card somewhere in NYC. As a matter of fact, you could probably walk for thirty seconds at any time and find a store selling them.

You're going to transfer to another device during your trip? That's the safe thing to do. In that case, the number of cards doesn't much matter. 64GB sounds like a good size, but if you fill one and find out that it's bad, that's bad. I generally use 16 and 32GB, although I just got a 64GB with a camera purchase.

Be sure to visit Adorama and B&H - on separate days. You want to be able to carry all your new gear. :D

I would stay with the 16mb or 32mb that way if a card fails or gets damaged you hopefully won't lose many photo's

What cards do you use now? Are they big enough? There are multiple variables to take into account and it REALLY depends on you, how many shots do you usually take when on a trip? How large are the files your camera produces?

I agree with not putting all your images on 1 card ... but 32MB gives me around 1000 raw images that can be 2 or 3 days shooting depending on circumstances (or just 1 day when things are very interesting).

One of my neighbors is an electrical engineer and he explains it this way:

Trying to load a bunch of info in a small space is cramming. Like a sandwich...something is likely to overflow and make things soggy or like a paper bag overstuffed.

He stays with 1 16 and just hauls more (they are inexpensive and don't take any room in the bag)

64MG is not very much, on my D800 thats only one photo, maybe two. I think you mean GB! I always bring a computer or drive to dump photos onto when I travel for extended periods. But this is not a reason to format and reuse your cards. Unless like in my case the camera shoots to two cards at one. For safety I like to have two copies of my data even on the road. So I can format one card and reuse it, but I keep the second card, and the ones on the computer.

Of course if my hotel has wi-fi, my computer can upload the photos to my transporter, and I have two copies again, one on the Transporter and one on the computer. Now I can format the second card.

My point here is that I always have two copies of the photos, that way I'm not subject to a bad card, or drive failure.

To how many cards to bring? What is your average file size? How many images do you think you will shoot? You should probably double that number, and you have your answer.

14 days, say you take photos for 10 hours/day, that's 8400 minutes. One photo per minute, 8400 photos.
Size of your raw files, let's say 25mb each. So you'd need 210,000 mb of storage, that's 205 gb.
Personally I would choose 16 or 32 gb SD cards, so that would be 13 or 7 card respectively.

I'm sure that in both NY and DC you'll be able to purchase more cards if needed.....

I would consider the cost of 8 32 GB cards compared with 4 64 GB cards and be inclined to choose the less expensive combination, except for the fact that, if a card is bad, you lose a lot more on a 64 GB card than on a 32. I don't have anything larger than a 32 GB card, but I carry up to eight at a time. For one day's shooting, I've never filled a 32 GB card shooting RAW + fine JPEG, but I have filled up a 16 GB card.

I would suggest that you first determine which brand card and models perform best for your particular camera. A google search should do the trick. As to size card, you will get an infinite number of opinions. I personally prefer large capacity cards even if I never use that capacity. Cards these days are very reliable and failures are rare. It is a good idea to frequently upload the files to your computer and reformat the card in your camera. Anyway, that's my 2 cents for whatever that's worth! Have a wonderful trip.

I'd recommend a hand full of 16gp or perhaps 32 tops. My reason is if a card fails you can always buy a new one while there but more over you won't lose so much data all at once.

32gb Sandisk should suit you just fine. To be on the safe side, take two.

Surely he will run smack dab into a stop-sign or telephone pole if he does not look up now and them.

Yea, but only 10 hours/day. That gives him 14 hours each day to eat, look around, brush his teeth.... etc.
Figured if I allotted lots of time to take photos, he would definitely have enough cards with him!
Of course, if he uses burst mode a lot.... well, let's not go there :)
