I'm looking to purchase a wide angle zoom lens for my Nikon D600. Will be used mostly outdoors for nature and landscape photography. I would like to keep the price under $1,000. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I'll check it out. Any thoughts on third party lenses?

Other members have suggested Tokina lenses - I use a Tamron and have been extremely happy with it on my D610.
You can search the forum for wide angle lens and scan the posts for ideas too...
I'm going through the same process right now deciding which zoom to buy for my D800. I've purchased factory refurbished bodies and lenses from both Nikon and Adorama with fantastic results. I'm thinking of either a refurbished Nikon 14-24 which is the gold standard of super wide glass, or the new Tamron 15-30 f2.8 WITH VIBRATION REDUCTION...The tamron has gotten rave reviews when compared directly with the Nikon. They claim that the Tamron is Sharper and has better contrast. They also claim little - no distortion or chromatic aberration...PLUS, it's only $1400 ! I've been rounding out my Holy Trinity of Nikon glass of the 24-70, 70-200, and only need to fill the Super Wide slot...from what I've read and seen on video reviews, I'm very tempted to go with the Tamron.
If you do not mind going off the beaten paths and saving money, I can recommend the Tamron SP asphereical 20-40mm f2.7-3.5 - about $200 most places used.
I would appreciate some user experience comments about the Tokina 16-28 and 17-35 wide angle options. These are more within my price range.
I think I have all of those--but the one reach for is the Sigma 8-16--angle of view very closely approximates the angle of view of the human eye

Have you considered the 20mm prime? I usually find 24m to be about right for landscape (Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, etc.). The 20mm would give you some latitude and allow you to crop and needed.
I like my Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8. Good price and good performance.

I have the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8. Some claim it to be second in quality to the 14-24mm f/2.8. Fairly small & light, filter capable, can be found used for under $1000.
Love my Tokina 16-28 F2.8. Rugged, sharp and fairly priced. Only down side is you can' t use filters

Of the two Tokina wide zooms, I opted for the 16-28 and I'm very pleased. I shoot a lot of interiors for realtors and was using my 28-300. Being able to open up to 16mm has given me a whole new spectrum and at f2.8 throughout the zoom range, I have plenty of light latitude. Go for it. You won't be sorry.
