Utility Trailer Lawn/leaf Bag Liner

Does anyone know if such a thing is manufactured and available for sale? A search on the web did not turn up what I'm looking for. I want a 3d liner, preferably one that folds up for storage, that will provide a sealed unit for the side & front rails so I can carry mulch, leaves, etc. All I can find is the molded mats for the floor similar to what is available for SUVs and pickups. I have a similar item I bought for my Ford Expedition several years ago that unfolds and provides about 2ft of height for the sides and back of the front seats. BUT, can't find the paper work to even determine the manufacture (no labels of any kind). In short, this item is made from a poly-like material like so many canvases are today.

I know the easy solution, or sort of, is to place a canvas large enough to fit the bed, sides and over the top. However, I would prefer the 3d solution.

There's a flaw in your thinking when it comes to leaf bag collection inside the bin or bag. These collection bags need to allow air to flow through them or they just don't collect the leaves and lawn clippings. However there may be a solution by using a medium hole sized polymer screen material and bond the sections to form a collection liner bag that can be inserted in the collection bin of the leaf collector or lawn mower attachment. Fine hole screening may be too restrictive to the air flow needed but the medium hole type used for fencing or chicken coops may be applicable. Hey. you can always try it with both types sizes of screening material and see which does the job best. The cost of such a liner is cheap since Lowe's and Home Depot sell the screening by the yard. You just need to find a glue to laminate the sections together to form the shape of your collection bin or bag or design the liner with snaps so it can be unfolded for dumping it's contents.
BTW, they do make carts that can be hitched to the rear of lawn mowers and tractors for collection of leaves and lawn clippings and then the exhaust port of the mower is connected to the trailer with a large hose. Some even have auxiliary blower motors to aid in the collection and transfer process.
It's well worth the effort if it works for you and send me the invention royalty check. LOL.

Thanks for the reply, but I was not looking for a collection bag. Rather, a transport liner to hold a load of mulch so it would not seep through the spaces between the side panels while transporting the load from the source to home. Also, a top cover to keep the mulch from blowing out. I can get an appropriate sized tarp to do the job, but was hoping for a more customized item.

It sounds like what you're looking for is one of those folding polymer (made out of recycled soda bottles) trash containers they sell in Home Depot. They normally are picked up by Waste Management Corp and used for demolition disposal when remodeling a house or getting rid of trash when moving. Not sure what sizes are available but it sounds like what you're looking for. Obviously, you either have a stake bed truck or the walls of your trailer have openings.

When I read your original entry, it sounded like you had a trailer hitched to a tractor and were just needing a liner for the leaf collection bag, but after reading your second entry, those Waste Management bags will definitely do the trick since they fold up like a tarp and have large handles woven into the top for the garbage collection people to pick up the full bag for disposal when they are called. But, you wish to reuse the bag over and over.
Check with Home Depot or contact Waste Management.

i used one of them for all the disposable trash I had collected when I moved and they do come all folded up like a tarp. Then, you can just tie the handles together with some rope to stop the mulch from flying out during transport. The one I used was about 10 feet long and 5 feet deep and 7 or so feet wide (not sure if they now make other sizes).

That sounds like a good idea. I'll check it out. Thanks. The size you mentioned might work. My trailer is 5'X10' and the sides are 2' high.

It sounds like what you're looking for is the demolition bags that Waste Management has that are about the size of a small dumpster. I think they make numerous sizes though. You buy them and then call Waste Management for pick up when they're full, but you just want it as a liner for your semi-open sided trailer to keep mulch from leaking out the sides. The bags also have handles ( for garbage truck pick up purposes), but you can use some rope and tie the pickup handles together for transport so there's no mulch flying out from winds when transporting the trailer.

Call Waste Management Corp for more details and ask if you can just buy the bag without the pickup option. When I used one, they were sold in Home Depot but that came with the disposal charges included in the purchase price.

Just keep in mind that a cubic yard of mulch weighs about a ton or so when damp, so your axle should be strong enough to take that load or it might break during transport.

Blue tarp on bottom, blue tarp on top. Several bungee straps.

Thanks for reminding me about weight. My trailer has a gross v.wt. of 2990 lbs and a net capacity of about 2400 (aluminum trailer). Thus, I may only be able to carry one cubic yd. The cubic ft capacity is 100. If my math is correct, that equals about 11 cubic yds., but that does not sound correct. I would think the figure to be closer to 4. I used 9 cu.ft to a cubic yd. The number is probably 27cu.ft to one cu.yd.

there's 27 cubic feet to a yard of mulch and not 9 as you calculated.

LENGTH X WIDTH X DEPTH
3 X 3 X 3 = 27 cubic feet = 1 yard.

My Chevy Silverado long bed pickup truck can only carry a little over 1 and 1/2 yards of damp mulch and that weighs in at under the GVW load rating of my heavy duty axle.

And truck axles are a lot stronger than those used on utility trailers. You also only have either plastic or single steel leaf springs so be aware of the trailer's load. When that bucket loader dumps 4 yards of mulch on your trailer and vehicle, it's going to bury both with a mountain of wet mulch and you'll need to dig out the vehicle to open the door.

Checked with HD - bags are $29.95 and do not have the pickup charge included. The bags are 4'X8'X2.5'. They will hold about 3 cu yds, so more than enough for wet mulch. Regards.

3 yards of damp or wet mulch will definitely be over weigh for your trailer though. Stay with only hauling 1 or 1.5 cu. yards so you don't have an expensive repair on that trailer axle.

Glad I was able to steer you in the right direction for the bags though.

Well, one thing the trailer does not have is springs of any kind. There's jiust the axle which is rated at 3500lbs. Guess that is a bit of insurance for the 2990 lbs gvw. I'll be heading to HD soon.

Thanks for all the help.
