Carefully selecting which ones, I have purchased several USED lenses (all but one, from eBay) and am SUPER HAPPY with them. . . .
=========
However, I got a TOKINA 100 Macro 2.8 for my 5D yesterday afternoon and it took two shots and then I got "Err 01" messages after clicking the shutter button.

I tried gently cleaning the contacts with alcohol and Q-tip, to no avail. The first time I tried cleaning with just a soft cloth and nothing more, I got one more working shot, and then nothing. Tried making some shots at F-22. . .nothing

I have Googled the issue a bit, but was wondering if anybody here had something pertinent to add to this "Err 01" message.

I will likey use eBay to force a return of this lens, (seller posted "no returns) but would like to be sure I have explored all avenues first.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I had this problem with a lens, and it was a "sticky aperture", which required service (~$120). You definitely have a "defective lens" and should insist on return & refund. Don't delay.

i Carefully selecting which ones, I have purchas... (show quote)

You should be able to get a refund through e-bay / paypal so long as the lens was described as working rather than 'as is.' or something similar.

It would be good if you can test and state that your other lenses work on the same camera without a problem, and if possible that the lens produces the same fault on other cameras. You may need a local friend / contact for that.

With those things in place you should have up to thirty days, but earlier contact is better than later to state the problem and to see what the seller says...

I've had the occasional problem like this and always had a reasonable result.

Good luck.

Do you have another Canon body to try the lens on?

I wish I knew somebody within 100 miles who did . . .

Hey, if I travelled to Walmart up in Frisco, I could test it with just one of their CANON cheapies, no?

Any Canon DSLR should do, even an old film EOS SLR should be good enough, just to eliminate your camera from the situation. I would however contact the seller ASAP and say that there may be a problem and that you are investigating....

At a push you could conjure up an imaginary friend with two Canon bodies and claim that the same problem occurred with both of them!

kind of odd, can you try a different lens on the body and see if that behaves if its ok try the 'suspect' lens again.

it looks like the pins on the body are sprung loaded to make contact with the plate on the lens so it could be a sticking pin or excessive wear on the plate. i wouldn't spend much time on it before contacting the seller maybe an hour. If you need to raise a dispute with paypal and then try to resolve it with the seller. That big club does help concentrate the sellers mind even if you don't need to use it. usually you end up withdrawing the claim as the seller becomes reasonable about things.

Yeah. . .but that is beyond my level of integrity. . . .of course, unless it was a truly DIRE situation, which this is not at this point. But I realize, you said: "at a push". I have already been communicating with the seller. . . .they said it worked fine just before they sent it. Hmmm. ...it was packaged quite well too.

I may drive to Vail tomorrow and see if I can test it on one of their CANONS> Maybe I can get their camera department employee to write a quick note confirming the lens did not function as is needed to take PIX.

It was listed as "Near Mint".

It LOOKS good. . .just doesn't work, LOL. Maybe it got damaged in shipping? Hard to imagine since it was packaged quite well. It was not double boxed though, but heavily wrapped with bubble wrap.

Annecdotely, I just received a lens today with ZERO padding, and it is fine. . .(not that the vibration did it any good) . . .It was an inexpensive lens or I'd be screaming at the sender for how they shipped it. AH-hahahhah!

Then, so long as it is not your camera and you can reproduce the issue on another body you are home free.

I guess the other question is what kind of seller was it? A photographer that owned the lens or just a dealer in stuff?

If the latter they may have no way to test it or to stand behind the "near mint" description other than a visual inspection, in which case your case is stronger.

Can you post the link to the e-bay auction so we can read it?

fine on the camera.
