focus and blur on same subject

Linda from Maine allowed me to post her picture. It was a great composition, but I had a problem with the out of focus flowers behind. I don't know if there is a rule for this, but I prefer the main subject to in focus and if parts are blurry they could be blocked by a dark sheet or just out of the main light. She gave me permission to show this for discussion perpose only. David PS I only spent seconds on the post process by using the magic wand. It is not done as a final product.

IMHO, the backround needs more blur - not darkness - and a slight crop ....

This is an opinion of what works and what does not.

In my opinion you are mistaken.

Very dramatic and attractive, David. I like it! btw, here is the original :) I added blur and a vignette as part of my artistic interpretation of the scene.

I lost this discussion. Most everyone thought the original was OK with a blurry background. I think the subject is like water falls. Some like it blurred and others sharp and clear. Anyway I congratulate Linda on a wonderful composition. David
