Couple of suggestions for [other] new photographers

Hi, I'm new to DSLR photography having moved up from point and shoot a few months ago. I now have a Nikon, D7100 and Tamron 16-300 lens to start with. It's a good starter for me as my preference is to shoot travel photos to go with my travel stories as I ride around the continent on my motorcycle.

This weekend I learned a couple of lessons. First, if you're new be sure to touch base with all your friends who have been shooting a while. We just spent the weekend in Mendocino and one of my friends who has been shooting for a long time had just gone to a full frame camera and had sold all her old lenses on eBay. What a bummer as they were in good condition and she would have been delighted to give me a really good price.

Second thing--she and I went out shooting and I learned more just by hanging around her then I have shooting on my own for the past few months. She didn't give instruction but would gently guide me and discuss issues as they came up and they were all suggestions that helped me start mastering my camera.

Anyway, if this helps anyone I'm glad.

Excellent ideas!

We often forget that people we already know are a wealth of info, and equipment :-D

Enjoy the scooter on the road, keep the shiny side up.

"Look and Learn" is an excellent technique, provided you're looking in the right direction.

It's a shame about the lenses. Things like that happen. On the other hand, you might want to thing about buying FX lenses, since they will generally give better results. Used and refurbished can save you money. Take a look at KEH.

That was the reason I purchased a Canon T2I 4 years ago when I wanted to do something in my retirement. Two of my friends shoot Canon's and they are a wealth of information, plus their exotic lenses fit my camera!

Many people have said the same thing. If all their friends have a certain brand, there would be no point in them getting something different if you expect to learn form them.

I don't have friends, so that's not an issue with me. :D
