Nikon Finally # 1 Again: The 2014 Bloomberg Reports are Out

My hat is off to Nikon!! It's official, I could not believe it when I saw the new Bloomberg reports. It's been 11 long years since Nikon had given up it's coveted #1 spot to Canon. Nikon has finally come out on top again in DSLR sales by just .1 of a percentage point! But hey, a WIN is a WIN!!
According to the report, buoyed the strong sales of the high mp D800/810 and even stronger sales of its 24mp and high DR introductory consumer models, Canon users and especially Baby-Boomers have been switching to Nikon in great numbers.
An industry insider was quoted as saying that even if Canon comes on strong with its 7Dmkll and the new 5D models, it could take Canon at least 5 years to slow the migration and reverse it with any significant numbers, and that's assuming that Nikon doesn't have any secret developments in the wings that the industry is not aware of.
Canon though is still the lens sales leader, so I won't be giving up my Canon gear for at least a few more years anyway.
In the end, I guess people DO pay attention to the DXO tests, as DXO was specifically cited for helping with the turning trend!!
I'll bet in at least in one state, they will be dancing in the streets!!
Congrats to Nikon!! ;-)

I suppose if you are a camera dealer, it's important to know what's hot and what's not. But for the individual user, does it really matter which camera brand other people are buying? If I should ever switch brands, it won't be because of how many photographers in my neighborhood are using that brand! Unless I plan to trade lenses with them, I simply don't care what camera they choose to shoot with.

Spot on! That's why lots of Nikon/Canon users are still Nikon/Canon users. And the scale will tip--Nikon will develop better lenses and Canon will introduce better bodies. They will force each other to get better and we, the consumers, will win.

Sharpie, I can't believe you posted this post today... April Fool's Day isn't until tomorrow!
I'd expect this from one of the Nikon fanboys, but it looks like you stole their thunder.
The large, good camera store in my area sells Canons 5 to 1 over Nikon; and their mirrorless sales are Olympus OMD 2 to 1 over Fuji X-series. It must not be indicative of the rest of the world!

I'm waiting for SS to say he's moving to Montana. Now that would definitely be April Fool's Day ;) ;)

SS is moving to Montana and going to work in Carter's Cottage, selling Canons, since Carter (MT Shooter) needs help with the Canon inventory now that he's swamped with so many Nikon buyers!

I'd fly out there just to take pictures, you guessed it, with my Canon!

But if he moved to Montana, he could shop in person at the Camera Cottage... Or maybe work the counter there so MT could get out and shoot a little more! My hat is off to SS, you're the last person I would have expected to so graciously and eloquently bring us this good news. All kidding aside, I agree that we need as much competition as possible to continue to see the incredible improvements in gear that have taken place in just the last 10 years alone. It's not possible to buy a bad DSLR anymore thanks to Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, et al, continually evolving and pushing each other. Good show, SS!

I'd imagine that Camera Cottage's Canon sales would really take off if SS worked the counter! :D

Whether this is an April Fool's joke or real, I'm not interested. Being number one is not a place to be since it means that everyone else is after you big time. It's not a sustainable position.

Instead I'd want Nikon, and even Canon as well, in the top five. That is a position that is sustainable. That is also a position that offers enough enthusiasm to make you try harder and yet not reckless enough to release products that are not completely bug free.

I think that the ongoing competition between Canon and Nikon is healthy and good for us all regardless of what brand we own. For instance as I bought a D800 and felt smug that Canon couldn't keep up, I knew too that they will catch up and now they have and even moved ahead. And that's fine, it simply means it's Nikon's turn now to advance the art another step once more.

If Nikon is really number one, something I doubt, I congratulate them for the achievement. And if they're not on top, I know they'll try hard to get there again.

C-A-N-O-N is an acronym for Can't Afford Nikon Oh No!
