My daughter's high school (Sacred Heart) boy's baseball team gets to play in a special event each year at AT&T park against rival St. Ignatius here in San Francisco. I took my new 7DII and new Canon 100-400 II on Saturday and sat about 5 rows up from the field just down the 1st base line. I really love this new camera for sports. The focusing, the frame speed and the clarity are excellent. I can't wait for the MLB season to start now!
I shot most of these in shutter priority mode with a variety of shutter speeds, some as high as 1/8000. ISO was set to auto, it was a bright day so nothing lost there with picture type set to landscape and white balance set for sun. Please see below, there will be 14 shots once all uploaded so it may take a few minutes. I've enabled downloads so feel free to check them out. I thought the clarity was very good.

What shutter speed completely froze the ball?
Hi Risingblue, 1/1000 if I'm looking at the right shot. For some shots, especially with the pro pitchers, I go up to 1/8000 and it is still not fast enough. I've worked at this for a while and have made a few observations based on my results on this very same subject / issue.
The fastball is one of the easier to capture the threads. The ball is thrown fast, but the threads don't spin as quick. Curves and breaking balls are much harder. The threads are spinning quite fast and are much harder to get in focus.
Taking a shot from behind home plate is easier for ball focus than shooting as I did from the side of the batter. However, I don't think the shots from that perspective are as neat as those taken from the side.
It's all fun and I like shooting at the park during the regular season.

He was walked to first base of course, but didn't seem to be too phased. I bet it left a mark though too! Oh to be 17 again!
