The Accidental Gardner

If I ever start a plant business I'm going to call it The Accidental Gardner. Yesterday I was watering my rose bush when I spotted a weed growing in the pot. I grabbed the weed and pulled it out. It came out root and all. It also had a big thing hanging off the side. I'm like, "What the...? Is that a snail?" Upon closer inspection I saw that actually what I had pulled out was a hazelnut seedling. Since all of it came out I planted it back in the pot. Now I want to track down another pot and some potting soil and see if I can keep it alive. Now there's a real challenge for a guy with a brown thumb. And I have no idea how the hazelnut got in the pot to start with. I've been living in an apartment for the last few years. Ahhh, such a strange but wonderful life I lead.

If pot had been outside last Fall, a squirrel could have buried it.

I thought you were talking about Ava Gardner. You meant "gardener," I guess.

Hazelnut or acorn? They look a lot alike and unless you live where hazelnuts are grown, I am going to say it was an acorn, which is the fruit of an oak tree. Though the two nuts look much alike, the acorn is toxic. It contains high concentrations of tannin. I would say your benefactor or culprit, as the case may be, was a squirrel.

It's a hazelnut. We have lots of hazelnut trees in the area, it's actually a major crop around here.
