On my Nikon D3100 when I try to delete a photograph it says
Cannot delete. protected image
I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me why it's there and how to get rid of it.
did you mark as locked anther option it was be on the side of the card there is a slder that will protect the files. slide it the oppisite up or down which ever it is now

One example lock/unlock tab
Look in your menu, you probably have the "Protect Image" enabled. Simply disable it....

It's not in your menu it is on the buttons on the left side of your LCD screen. Some are multifunction buttons and you pressed the one with the icon of a key on it. Just go back to the image in question, when it shows on your LCD simply press that button once more that shows the key icon on it and you will have unlocked the image and can now delete at will.
Yoiu will see in the LCD image that it is either showing (the key icon) on the image if it is locked, or not showing, wheich means it is unlocked. Try it on another image so that you are familiar with how it works.
