Hi, I have some pictures that I have finished processing and now I need to take them in for processing. How do I get them off the computer and on to a compact card. I have tried to burn a disc and I got a start notice saying it is going to take 18 hours and 24 minutes. I started it but it only seemed to work for maybe 5 minutes and then stopped. The computer it is on is an H&P desk top. I need to get these pictures off as they are very important. After I get them off I am going to get rid of this computer. Please help if you can. Thanks, Mike

Do you have the ability to transfer them to a flash drive? That would be a faster way than buring a disc. Or if the computer has internet access you could directly upload them to a place for processing and get them that way.

Sounds like you have a lot of pictures. You need to consider the size of the folder that contains the pictures. Right click and see the size of the volume. It may not fit on a disc.

Right click the image, click "Save as", then chose your compact card that you had placed in the reader. This will copy it there and not affect your original.

Get a USB hard drive. Copy all files to it, the store will be able to read this and you will have your stuff on 2 drives.

When you get rid of the HP (Highly Problematic) computer, be sure to either keep the internal hard drive or give it a good data wipe. (Don't spend money on wiping software, there are plenty free programs that will wipe to military spec.)

While not addressing your original question, you should also consider a stand alone hard drive or an online backup storage option (I prefer the former). If something were to happen to your computer your pictures could be lost forever. I don't know too many people that have NEVER had a hard drive crash.

Yep. Years ago. I run a DJ business and lost music, contacts, contracts, etc. Now my system is stupid redundant. Main hard drive for applications only. 2nd hard drive for content (music, photos, docs, video, etc). 2 external hard drives that automatically back up every day.

I also use dropbox to sync my two lappy's to my main computer (for DJ'ing).

OK, here's my suggestion. Since you're getting rid of the computer and I'm assuming you're not giving it away to someone else, open the tower and remove the hard drive.
Go to your nearby computer shop or online computer store, like Microcenterk or CompUSA, and purchase an external hard drive enclosure.
You insert/install the hard drive in the enclosure and plug it in to your new computer via the USB port. Now you have your original pix and data on a second drive.
While your at the shop or online, you might want to pick up an extra external hard drive to back up everything. At least a 1Tb hd or larger.

How many pictures are you trying to tranfer?

As suggested above check the folder size...I cant think of much that would take 18 hrs to download.

Hi, I am trying to transfer about 85 pictures, and of those there are only 10 that I really need. The time issue is due I think to the HP computer. It's about 4 years old and has been useless from the time I brought it home which is why I rarely used it. I put these pictures on it as I wanted to learn photoshop and decided that things being on this wouldn't interfere with my primary computer usage. I also should have mentioned that I'm older than dirt and, as such, some of the suggestions are undoubtedly great don't help me as I have no idea how to do them. I am very appreciative of all your suggestions and thank you. Mike

My computer was built (by me) in 2007. To transfer 85 photos via USB-2 to an external drive MIGHT take 3 - 4 minutes MAX, assuming the images were HUGE (like 25MB RAW files).
.
If your images are the NORMAL 5MB JPG images - then you have a max total of 425 MB, which at typical USB-2 speeds of 480 Mbps (or 60 MBps - you'll be lucky to see 20 MBps) at 20 MBps would take 21 seconds to transfer.
.
Flash drives are notoriously SLOWER than USB external HDD - so may take a little longer - but would be on the order of MINUTES - not Hours - - so I suspect something may be severely wrong with how you're trying to do this - -

Maybe somebody who is good at remote desktop could handle this. I am not that guy.

Just a thought.

What 'class' is your CF card? and what kind of a card interface do you have.
If you only have USB-1 - there's a problem! USB-1 is horribly slow. USB-2 is tolerable. USB-3 and E-Sata are zippy !
.
Rent a high-school geek (mebe your son, son or daughters friend etc) - - they'll play with your HP for a few minutes and tell you what's up.
