I own a Canon 18 - 85 mm EFS lens.
It now refuses to focus on A/F in so much that it keeps 'hunting'.
Is it worth having it repaired, or going for a 'similar' lens, as I have been informed that there is a known issue with this lens.
If so, any advise please would be appreciated

How about upgrading to a good used 15-85?
The extra wide is worth the cost.
Very nice on my 7D2.
Got it at Adorama for $450.
What's the market value of a working 18-85?

I'd try cleaning the contacts on both the camera and the lens with some isopropyl alcohol and either a q-tip or similar. It got one of my lenses going again...

There is not now and never has been a Canon EF-S 18-85mm lens. There are EF-S 18-55mm... And there are EF-S 18-135mm.... And there is an EF-S 17-85mm. And the EF-S 15-85mm already mentioned.

Depending upon which lens we're actually discussing, it may or may not be worth repairing. Typically a failed AF motor in a lens will cost around $300 for repair by Canon Service Dept. But it might only be a failed cable that needs replacement, so may cost less. Probably a minimum of $100 to $150 in labor alone, though. Rick or other third party repairer can probably do the repair for less than Canon themselves.

If it's an EF-S 18-55mm "kit" it's likely not worth repairing. Particularly the earlier models without IS or STM focus drive just aren't worth much. But even the later/better ones are widely available lightly used for little money.

EF-S 18-135mm IS STM is an "upgraded kit" lens while the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM is more "upscale" lenses... and both might be worth repairing, if the cost isn't too high.

EF-S 15-85mm IS USM is a top performing and fairly pricey lens that almost certainly would be worth repairing.
