Tonopah car show

If anyone walked by with a camera this young lady would jump up and pose.

The 409 was not available until 61. The highest HP available in 60 from the factory was the 348 with 3-2's and Duntof cam, rated 315 HP. Not that it really matters, the cars are all great.

Sweet 60 Impala. Was it a 409?

if faithfully restored had to be a small block, 409 had the big dual snorkle air cleaners. 235 inline 6, 283 , 348 and 409's were available in 1960.
Great shot of a gorgeous ride.
Then again I had a 350 Vega and I know of several 454 Vegas, you c an pretty much put anything in anything

Hi Quickflash,
I shoot a lot of car shows and something that i have found in bright sunlight is to shoot 1/2 to 1 full stop under especially on brighter colors; they turn out more vibrant and you can always lighten them later if needed. Also play with your white balance to see which will give a better color because if you are using daylight sometimes it gets fooled, ect. on the color of the car that is.

I found I had to change settings often because of the intense sun and extreme shade. As far as WB is concerned, I used the Auto WB setting, and I thought the colors to be quite accurate.
Anyway, I thought I did pretty well, given my very limited experience shooting this kind of stuff. Next time, I may experiment a bit more with WB and aperture settings. Thanks for your post.

Great photos. Glad to hear you enjoyed the show. I know what you mean by a lot of cars. There is a major car show & swap meet in my area every August that my relatives are involved in and I have been a little as well besides attending since it takes place around my birthday and even sometimes on so I get to really enjoy it. Some years we have over 300 cars for show so you need to come early and plan on making it a day to see all of them in detail. My favorite from above is the nice Bel Air that has not been hot rodded.

Thanks, Photo guy, we had a great time, but I wish I had gotten there earlier. I would have had more time to look closer at some of them and a few had already left.

I know how that goes. I missed a number of shows over the years that were smaller ones at different locations but am starting to get back into going. First ones of the year in my area start up in late April so I can't wait.

Don't miss them. We thought we had missed this one because it was supposed to be a week ago and was rained out. Thankfully they rescheduled and we remembered!

This was my first time also. There is a car show in Buckeye at the Verado High School at the end of the month. I plan to go there.

In 1960, the biggest they had was the 348 cubic inch, with tri-carbs 335 HP , You could bore out the 283 ci to 301, with FI , it would run low 10's,in qtr, but was not streetable. 409 was original truck engine, reworked for the impala's in 62. maybe 61, 327 was only in vette's in 62.

Many great pictures that clearly communicate well to the audiance. You have generated a lot of entusiasm! That means your pictures have passed the primary test of conveying your message to others.

Having just completed a two-day photography course I'll offer a few comments on that aspect. I can see the environment is tough sometimes with a lot of clutter and people moving around.

Pictures of parts of cars are fine when that is the message you want to get across. If it looks like you want to portray the whole car though you might be more careful to ensure you don't chop off little parts like the tire on the first one and a little bit of fin on another.

Changing the angle or waiting can sometimes clean up the people problem. It might take some patience.

You have a couple of choices to help on the backgrounds. One is to use aperture to fuzz the background so your the sharp focus on your subject makes it jump out and makes the background less distracting. Sometimes you might be able to move or change camera elevation to get something you like better. When you are interested in the subject it is sometimes easy to not pay attention to the background you are including.

A couple of them seem to need some exposure adjustment as someone noted. You should probably use your spot meter and be sure to meter on what you want, and then check on your LCD that it is giving what you want. My course would have you using Manual but they didn't sell me completely on that and I won't try to explain how to do it here.

Hope some of those thoughts will help you take your already good pictures to the next level.

Theo, my lady-friend insists that I was nuts before we even got there, years ago she says! But, when I get excited, oh boy!

Hi Vinnie,
Thanks for the info, hope you liked the photos. It seems we have a lot of old car experts on UHH in addition to great photographers. I'm not, as you can tell an expert in either field, but I do have loads of passion for both.
