What is this button?

Question for my Hog friends. I have the Tamron 150-600 on my D7100, and so far, I love it. There is one button on it that says "Full:15 mm - (infinity mark)." Can anyone, and will anyone explain to me what this is for, and when should I use it?

This helps you avoid focus hunting. That direction gives the full focus range, the other end limits focus to objects closer to you. I don't have the lens but many long zooms have the same switch.

Googled:

"This is a focus limiter.

Leave it at FULL.

Set it to 15m-∞ only if the lens is getting confused and trying to rack itself all the way in and out as you try to focus on distant targets. The 15m-∞ position prevents it from autofocusing closer than 15 meters (50 feet)."

The problem with leavin it at that setting, is if a bird lands 14 meters away, you won't be able to focus on it.
It's good to use the farther setting if the light is bad and the lens tends to hunt while you only shoot subjects that are far away. In good light the lens should not hunt, so it shouldn't matter and you won't miss the shot of that little songbird that lands on the bush next to you! It may have been the best shot you ever would have taken !! Good luck. ;-)

This is incorrect. The 15m position stops it from focusing any closer than 15m. I used it at first & lost too many close up shots while fiddling around trying to turn it off. Best to leave it off all the time as focus hunting is not an issue, at least on mine.

I agree mine is set to Full all the time. It has such a good focus ability
I almost never have a problem even focusing on the moon at night.
It will hunt no matter what if I try to focus on the sky alone.

That's a self-destruct button.

Okay, okay... not really. It is a focus limiter, as others have stated. Can be a helpful thing to reduce the range of focus in certain situations, mostly to speed up focusing and/or reduce hunting. Just experiment with it a little and be aware it's there, in case you need to use it. You likely won't want to use it, most of the times.
