Perfect day for manual fill flash on birds, using the Canon 7D MkII.
Today was a full manual day. The camera was on manual and I pulled out a fully manual flash unit, to use on birds.
All of this is doable but you must be familiar with controlling all of your settings on both your camera and your flash. The camera settings have to be set for ambient light and the flash now has to work on the subject only. There is no ETTL nor high speed synchro shutter speed on this unit. I was close enough so a Better Beamer wasn't required. Shutter speed was set at 1/250". That was the only constant on this shoot. The rest was manipulation of aperture, light and ISO changes. If you happen to check the EXIF data it will indicate that the flash did not fire since the flash unit isn't from Canon and the camera doesn't recognize it. Have a look and tell me what you think.
Definitely not over expose, well captured and nice bokeh.
I'd say job well done!

What I think is that these are masterful shots using a flash in a way that I have not mastered. Thanks Joe.

Great shots Joe. The one thing that puzzles me is that even with flash fill I thought I'd see more of a "catch light" in their eyes.

Nice even fill, Joe.
Another superbly taken group of shots! The second shot of the Red Bellied Woodpecker is one of the finest examples of lighting of the eyes that I have seen. The detail of the squirrel is really, really good!

Thank Gregory. It was a lot of fun to do but it won't be on my regular diet.
