The USS Constitution is the oldest active duty warship in the world. Here it is under sail from its home port in Boston, Massachusetts.

Fair winds and following seas. As a Naval Officer stationed in Newport, RI some years ago, I made a quick visit to Boston and have stood on her conning deck, albeit moored to the pier. I am a fond proponent of Navy tradition.

Bob, Here's another one you and other ex-Navy types may enjoy. It was taken by my wife from our boat off Marblehead, MA on July 21, 1997 when the Constitution sailed under her own power for the first time in 100 years. It was taken in B&W, not converted from color, on a somewhat hazy day; winds were about 8 kn, and she was doing 5 kn/hr--not bad for a square rigger under partial sail! The signature and dedication in the upper left corner are from LtCdr. Claire Bloom who was then the Executive Officer (the 47th) on the ship. She was a fellow Sommerville, MA Rotarian at the time.
This is a scanned copy of the original 8" x 10" print so the detail isn't quite as sharp as my original. Unfortunately the negatives are buried somewhere in one of several boxes of prints and negatives unpacked since our move to MD.

I wasn't an officer, but offer the same sentiments.
This has a special meaning for me since I was commissioned on the ship and I also had my retirement ceremony on her. I was an LDO Photographic Officer.

I thought I recognized a deft touch with a camera Pixelmaster. While I didn't go the LDO route, I too started my Naval career as an enlisted man ...... but then got out, went to college on the G.I. Bill, and came back as an officer. I've never regretted it.
And I admire the scanned image ....... I am also very much interested in the American Revolution, so this photos hits home on a number of levels.
Always glad to have served some time as a Chief Petty Officer on my way up the ladder. Retired after 30 years of service.
LCDR but ran out of time for Commander.

Since we both started our Navy careers as enlisted "anchor clankers" here is one just for you.

Love the shot. I thought that old Ironsides only came out on the 4th of July. I tour around the harbor and then back to bed. Never mind, this ship should be out on the waves under its own power. Nice shot of a remarkable vessel. Thanks for posting.
Sure would like to see this in color.
