In these two images, a Sunset from Big Sur, CA and a Sunrise from Ensenada, Baja, I use foreground elements to help carry and add interest to the already vibrant colors.
Is this necessary or are the colors enough on their own??
Are we adding or taking away from the image??
Thanks for your participation! ;-)

To me, the first photo emphasizes stark contrasts -- the blackness of the night with the promising beauty of a new day. It would be interesting to compare it with slight processing to allow some detail of the face of the imposing hill.

The second shot distresses me, perhaps because of my conservationism; I dislike seeing the crass statement of the rigs challenging the sunrise.

I like em both but agree with Erv on the second; there the image distracts. However in the first shot it adds some depth and character to what could have been just a normal dull sunset. By the way SS thanks for doing this. One thing I enjoy about the forum is the learning opportunity. John

As I went through these posts, I noticed that the Rule of Thirds was evident, alive and well in the best compositions.

Sunrise/sunset are my favorite photography subjects and this shot is my favorite so far. I took it in Garden City SC, I was there photographing a stone jetty in the ocean using a long exposure to give the waves a "Milky" appearance when I turned toward the South and saw how the sunset colors turned so pretty. I was using an exposure of f/6.3, 8 second shudder speed at ISO 100 for the jetty shots and never thought to change the settings. I really like the overall color in the shot along with the lines where the water and beach meet and the row of ocean front homes.

Lots of stunning shots here, most of which are thoughtfully composed. I have to wonder though, what's the point of pursuing a "calendar" shot. Is gee whiz effect enough? Shouldn't meaningful or thought provoking content delivered with a sense of beauty really be the objective? One thing for sure, if you can make a truly original or noteworthy shot of such a well traveled subject, you indeed have really done something. Maybe some shots are unavoidable - Just wondering - I'm of two minds about it -

I think this is a gorgeous shot.
The homes in the foreground are interesting and form a leading line to the ocean, sky, and sunset colors. The triangle formed by the ground and ocean leads to the center of the sky. It's just as interesting wherever one's eye looks.

OZ :) :) :) :)

I like that the sun is still visible.
I'd like feed backs, thank you.

Yesterday I was at the Venice Rookery at sundown. The sun sets from the west making it difficult to photograph the birds from the best point of view.
Here are my three shots.
I loved the silhouette of the birds.

Feedback is welcome.

Very well said.

For me it's the moment that the photo was taken. What "I" saw, what I smelled at the time, who I was with. It was a moment worth saving (capturing). That doesn't always translate to a "good" photo, but rather a memory, that when I visit the photo, I relive the moment it was taken. It was the trip, the location (a place I have never been, or favorite place visited again). If it happens to wake up something in someone else by viewing it, well that is a bonus. The curse of getting deep into this photo thing is that I see a photo in this and that or don't see anything at all. I have to force myself outside the photog box to just enjoy the moment every now and again. I've been with other out walking when they say, "stop, I wanna grab a photo here" and I stop , look and just don't see what they see. That is when I am reminded how much fun this is. It's a personal journey shared. Not always understood, but shared anyway.

Very nice. I especially like the soft lighting in the houses which gives an additional warmth to the sunset.

I agree that a good sssr image needs not only good color but a good foreground or background topic as well, it IS hard for the color to stand alone. To me, though, the most compelling sssr images actually have all or at least a piece of the Sun in them. Actually seeing the big yellow/orange ball lighting up the sky and surroundings is what really makes a sunset stand out for me.

I think that having something in the foreground helps tremendously. Your second shot is a good example. The equipment on the right balances the clouds on the left.

On the other hand, that rock formation in the first shot doesn't do much more than block a beautiful sunset.

Agree.
