First impressions: Sony FE 24-240mm

Overall, I like the lens. It is sharp and the colors look good.

But, it's very heavy. I would estimate that it is just as heavy as my Tamron 28-300mm that I use on my Canon 5DIII. The whole reason for getting the Sony A7 was to have a lighter camera for travel. This lens negates that advantage.

It also lacks a switch for turning off the auto-focus. I was hoping I could make minor adjustments with the lens focusing ring. But it didn't do anything after the camera auto-focused.

I guess the only way to override the autofocus is to go into the camera's menu and turn it off. Not convenient, when all I want to do is choose a different focus point than the lens has selected. A couple of times, I focused on a blossom on a tree, centering it in the crosshairs of the viewfinder. But the camera wanted to focus on some leaves that were closer. The only way to get the camera to focus on what I wanted, was to focus on something else, and then return to the blossom.

Maybe I can set one of the user-defined buttons to temporarily defeat autofocus.

Despite some negative reviews that warned of softness at full zoom, I found the lens to be sharp at all times.

Nevertheless, autofocus is also sometimes a bit slow, and there's some hunting. This occurred outdoors during bright daylight.

Despite these shortcomings, I will keep the lens. I need a good zoom to use when I travel.

I've done some minimal post-processing on the attached photos, mainly cropping.
