Slonimsky was a giant of a musician, a scholar, chronicaler, author, composer and one of the truly great characters of the 20th century. Read about him on Wikipedia. Richard Avedon made a portrait of him two years before his death and The NewYorker used it in an obituary in late December '96--or maybe into Jan. '97.
We had the very good fortune of meeting with him in May of 1988 when I took this picture.
