Migrating Tundra Swans at Middle Creek WMA

Even though the lake at Middle Creek was still mostly frozen the migrating snow geese, tundra swans and other water fowl have eventually arrived. Based on my photographs from previous years, the migration is at least two later this year. Supposedly there are more than 140,000 snow geese and 1,000 tundra swans migrating through Middle Creek WMA this year.

Many of the tundra swans were gathered on the ice on the lake, but there were constant streams of groups of swans arriving and leaving the lake.

Even though the light and wind direction was not optimal, this provided a fantastic opportunity for capturing these magnificent birds in flight. It is a wonderful experience to be able to see such large numbers of these graceful birds in one place.

I have included several other photographs in the comment box showing the migrating swans.

Great shot of the collision avoidance, I was there yesterday taking great shots of the snow geese, did you walk down to the point to get the swans.....
It is awesome to see 100,000 snow geese there .. The sun was perfect and the sky was blue , and the wind kept them flying.. We both got great shots.

Thanks for the comments Lenf.

Yes I got most of the shots at the point but also a bunch at the start of the loop road when lots of the swans started flying out to the North West.

It would have been great to meet you there.

Thanks wolfe - various settings depending on the light but generally 1/1250 @ f/9 and ISO 500. I was using aperture priority and mast were backlit so had compensated with +1 1/3 EV. All were shot with a Canon 7D and a Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens

Beautiful series Peter -- love those big birds and love to hear their calls! They have also been migrating from our area for about the last couple of weeks. They are usually very high, so don't see ever flock we hear, but always look for them, and just to hear their wild call is something to remember. I took our little dog Bella, outside before bedtime last night and the first sound that I heard was that beautiful wild call! Doesn't get much better!
