I apologize for the 'not-so-good-photos...I just had my land camera with me. But I was walking in the shallows off of Caye Caulker, Belize and saw these. They were all moving. I thought/think the are some sort of jelly fish, but not shore (sure LOL). Can someone help me out with these???

Not sure what they are, br3kes, but surely someone on here will be able to tell you.

They look like upsidedown jellies. #1 though doesn't look like it was upside down.

None of these where upside down. They were def alive and moving. I just have never seen these and was wondering if they actually were 'Jellyfish'. When I moved them with a leaf...they moved away. Im hoping one of you out there, like Critterhunter, can help. Batfish arent common here either but I've seen three so far...

Not sure if you understood. I wasn't saying that they just looked like they were dead and upside down. There are two species I'm familiar with: upside down jelly, Cassiopea xamachana and Mangrove Upsidedown Jelly, C. frondulosa. They do move around, but when hunting they sit on the bottom upside down with thier tenatcles pointing up. Here's a pic of both I took in Key Largo.

Wow! Cool...did not know they did this. How about the first one...it actually looked like its legs were part of the algea?

As far as I know all Jellies have poisonous nematocysts. Some are not noticible like those on the Jellies in Jellyfish Lake in Palau, all the way to Box Jellies that can kill you.

I doubt the upsidedown Jelly is very toxic. They get some of their nutrition from symbiotic algae that reside in their tentacles, and the rest is from plankton captured by the nematocysts. It may sting some though as some crabs carry them around on their backs as protection.

My degree is in Horticulture. I did take Marine Biology classes in both High School and College. Mostly I just have a lot of books.
