I posted this in photo gallery, but failed to get a single comment in about 5 hours. Maybe it belongs here, instead.

Yesterday, the Oakland Colonels hosted the San Francisco Pacifics at Mosswood Park in the Vintage Base Ball League (1880's era baseball).

Quite fun to watch, even if the play wasn't so great (assisted greatly by the tiny, flat fielding gloves).

You'll notice quite a few beards & mustaches, and a few vintage sideburns, all in keeping with the era:

Those pictures are a hoot. Look at that umpire! Look at the details. Facial hair, real wooden skinny bats, those mitts, the uniforms, no home plate, first base in the grass. No spoiled millionaires here.

Photographically, I would increase the contrast a little either by boosting the green, vibrancy, or clarity, straighten the verticals and cropping a little more judiciously.

Thanks for posting and do post more of these whimsical shots.

Thank you for looking & commenting, NikonKnight.

I accidentally discovered this league at Golden Gate Park two weeks ago. I looked up the schedule afterwards and found out that this past Sunday's game was only a couple miles from me, so I got this series.

Thanks, Jules.

I shoot in manual; these were taken with a Canon 50D, 70-200L f2.8 lens. ISO 400, f6.3, shutter speed usually around 1/1250, but adjusted depending on direction of light.

Thank you for the info. I can't get over how cool this game must have been. The gloves remind me of my first one for Little League.

It is very cool. Having the ump stand 20 feet behind home plate b/c he has no protective gear is very different, and every fielding play is an adventure with those tiny, flat gloves, in addition to the time-period garb.

That's a nice action set. It looks like they're having a big time and you captured their fun well. If you get to shoot this group again, think about minimizing the background distractions, like the modern automobiles, for a more old-timey look. Push the numbers around to get a shallower depth of field so the cars will be out of focus. On a bright day, like when these shots were taken, I'd start at ISO 100 and a big aperture. You might even consider using aperture priority and letting the shutter speed be set automatically. You could probably go to 1/250 or slower without getting blurry. What's your white balance setting?

Thanks for the suggestions.

This is an urban park, so shooting without autos in the background would be just about impossible - but I could have tried for a narrower depth of field and maybe had them more blurred.
