Just a little about myself:

Justin, I'd love to give you a shot, but I'm in Indiana. Quite a drive. Our section here on UHH is only a few months old, and we only have about 130 users in this group. In this instance, I would suggest that you try posting this in the general photography section, just so you get more people to see it. (and of course, you could also mention our little corner of the world here)

I've gotten a few interns by checking craigslist, or advertising there. I'm not a fan of craigslist for many reasons, but it is a possible place for you to find someone willing to give you a "shot" and get you started.

For what it's worth, you are approaching this the right way. Books, and even classes will only take you so far with getting your feet wet. Actually working with a mentor is the absolute best way to gain experience. Don't be surprised at some of the quality you see with CL (run and gun) photographers. You can even learn what not to do by working with them. I'm a firm believer that you can learn as much by seeing what not to do, as you can at learning how to do it correctly. You just have to know the difference.

I hope you keep checking back, and let us know when you've done your first assignments. I'm sure we'd all be happy to help guide you.

Anyway, welcome aboard, and I sincerely hope you find someone to accept you (the price is right :-)

Hi, I am in the DC area but am sort of out of the wedding business (not actively looking for jobs). If you are serious, you might look into the Maryland Professional Photographer's Association (MDPPA, a PPA affiliate). We are primarily a wedding and portrait group and someone is always looking for assistants. There are varying levels of membership and is great for people such as yourself; lots of experienced people willing to share their knowledge.
You might also look into the DC chapter of ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) for their apprentice program.
Good luck!
